C5 X7 Yellow Coolant?

Post by Lenny »

Evening all,

I've just realised that my coolant level is a bit low (following losing a bit when I did the EGR valve a bit back).
The stuff that is in it (probably original) is a yellow sort of colour but there's nothing in the same delicate hue in Halfords. All they could offer me was red, blue or green.
Is the genuine anti-freeze yellow?
Is it the same as anything more common (red, blue or green)?
:?

Any advice gratefully received.

I don't think the colour gives that much away as theres not a set colour for each type, ECP have coolant for my car in at least 3 colours. It matters more that you get the right type, although I have no idea what that is for your car. If it were mine I'd either top up the coolant with DI water or replace it entirely, depending on weather it looked fresh and had good colour.

Colour means nothing - there is no standardisation between manufacturers for coolant types and colouring.
To be safe, drain and flush the system, and refill with one type only, for both filling and subsequent topping up.

Under no circumstances should long-life OAT (organic acid) types be mixed with other varieties, because damaging inter-reaction can occur. If you are unlucky, this can take the form of precipitation, formation of goo or crystals, or system blockage. Plenty on the web about this. Have experienced it first-hand; not nice.

If adding water, only use deionised/demineralised, as advised above. This avoids the formation of limescale in the system.

I'd use that, might want to go through a coffee filter first. My driers not a condenser so I'm yet to see the output water quality. Distilled water is basically water thats heated to steam then condensed back to water, Thats exactly what your drier gets up to.

I use RO water (reverse osmosis, pretty much all chemicals removed) from our local aquarium supplies shop. £4 for 25 litres...

I'd probably use it too if I lived in an area that wasn't the South East with its horrid water!

There is that of course. My son and my nephew never had any success keeping fish in London.
They did try Evian water too

I run 25L of near boiling water into a demijohn, wait until it cools sufficiently then dump it in the aquarium, once a week.
Bloody fish live forever.

It's a nuisance keeping fish here. I almost wish I'd never started but my missus will kill me if I stop after the money I spent!

The only fish I've had success with here have been Zebra Danios, Neon and Black Widow Tetras, a ruby shark and a little bristlenose catfish. My problem is that the shark eats the neon tetras because they p**s him off by going into his hidey-hole!

Anyone want to buy 2 x 70 litre tanks, with heaters, lights and filters and some fish? :O
