Xantia TD Coolant Bleed Screws

Post by angle »

Hi,

I've recently had fitted a new radiator and thermostat into my Phase 1 Xantia TD. Unfortunately one or the other of them is now playing up. They were both fitted by garages due to lack of time / weather / botheredness, but as its now light and sunny I feel like I should be trying to work this out myself. Thermostats are cheap, so lets start with that.

Unfortunately, looking over the engine to make sure I know what I'm doing, I can't for the life of me find the coolant bleed screws that are allegedly there. I can see the one on the T-piece towards the back left of the engine (as you look at it) but there's meant to be one on the thermostat housing, and possibly a third depending on what you read. Where am I meant to be looking? There's the fuel filter bleed screw on the front of the fuel filter housing, but that's all I can see.

Also, reading up on bleeding, I did the milk bottle in the expansion tank trick on my old (petrol) ZX which worked but was difficult to get a proper seal on. I've seen mention of covering the expansion tank filler with your hand and blowing into the overflow pipe to bleed instead - is that the clear plastic pipe that comes off the front of the expansion tank just under the filler and disappears somewhere down below?

Many thanks for any help.

Hi angle ftom memory of a while ago.. a bleed on the rad ..top right as you face the engine ..possibly one there..

One on the thermostat housing or near it. Hard to see and may just be an Allen headed stud and the back one on the heater matrix pipework ..
Others with more recent td escapades will help more in a bit

I could bleed a tu5 in my sleep in a saxo i did it that often! They had a crap one on the rad top edge, one on the thermo then another on the pipework leading from the back of the engine near the mount!

I tried using the expansion tank method on the xantia and it didnt work, ended up getting it up to temp and gingerly removing the bleed screws!

My 1995 S1 Td also has just the two bleed points as "chinkostu".

I use the bottle method as outlined in Haynes - works fine. I use an old bottle with gently tapering neck, and wrap insulation tape around the neck which has a bit of give in it to help get a good seal with the expansion tank. The coolant level rises quite a bit into the bottle during bleeding, and I have the bottle tied with bits of string to hold it in place vertically so it doesn't fall over at a critical moment.
