C5 Petrol sounds like a diesel at start up?

Post by Smarty2 »

I have a 2.0L 2007 exclusive with 70000 miles on the clock and have noticed at start up only the engine clatters like a diesel? It is progressively getting worse over time, anyone have any suggestions as to what it is, not sure on the cambelt change interval on the petrol version? :?

Only a possibility, but is your oil filter possibly a cheapie without the specified non-return valve fitted? The valve prevents the filter from draining while the engine is switched off.
Check is easy: look at the ring of circular holes in the filter element base, and you should see a rubber membrane immediately behind the holes.
Same momentary clatter can sometimes be heard when a new (empty) filter is fitted and first started up.

Does it have a make/brand/no on it? That would nail that one.
For how many seconds (hopefully) does the clatter persist before disappearing?

Well it varies with the length of time standing idle and if it is sloping backwards for instance, but on average 2 to 3 seconds and longer on a slope! I know it doesn't sound like a long time but my other C5 petrol never made it!
Would this be a suitable replacement? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-C5-MK ... 1517183016?

Service Citroen has the filter listed 1109AL*****, which is a Purflux item, and the same as your second ebay item above.
Also available from Citroen/Peugeot under same part number, and numerous motor factors.
Purflux are top-quality, and have the proper non-return valve fitted. Best to use them if in doubt.

Fingers crossed this is the cause. What you describe does sound like a classic 'empty filter' stert-up.

Still interested in what was fitted to your engine. Could you take a look?

*****Edit: Ignore this, obviously the wrong item.

Easier said than done, had a peek this morning at work but I couldn't even see it! Soo many panels and boxes and plastic everywhere!
I ordered the Parflux filter so will get my local garage to fit it. Thanks for the help.

Right then, that went A**e over T*ts! Wrong filter and £8.90 down the drain... Took it in to my local garage and was informed by the fitter that it was the wrong type, here's the correct type for anyone else who has the 2.0L 16v petrol version http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Citro ... dc3&000231 No wonder I couldn't locate the thing by looking! So I am more worried now about this rattle at start up? The technician said if a new filter and oil hasn't made a difference I will need to drop it off and they will investigate further by holding on to it and doing a cold start with a manual oil pressure gauge fitted to check the oil pressure at start up since I have no warning light during start up, it could be a faulty sensor?

It doesnt sound like a lack of pressure, it sound like a lack of oil.
If the oil is draining back due to the incorrect filter the pressure comes up fine but it takes a while for the oil to actualy re-fill the filter and travel up to the valve gear and pressurise the hydraulic followers.
Have you had the filter changed yet or are you awaiting the new filters arrival? i would agree with what everyone else has said, sounds like the oil is running back when left standing for long periods of time to me.

Best of luck with it sir.

Yes they changed both oil and filter, never noticed the rattle when I bought the car it is something that has increased over time, not sure where the filter sits on the engine I am assuming since it is an internal filter cartridge it would be in a downward position where the oil wouldn't drain anyway?

If its a paper element then i would guess that a non return is fitted into the filter housing as it would be near imossible to fit it to the element. If the noise started one day out of the blue i would be looking bat whether the little (sometimes plastic) non return valve was damaged during a filter change.
Gradually increasing noise over time would suggest a bad follower thats dropping its oil when left overnight, any chance of some top notch audio of a start up?

That will do, just interested to hear if it shounds the right speed to be valve gear related and how the noise fades away or stops dead etc

Hi, started up this morning and no rattle! Started it on an incline an hour or so later and only the briefest rattle, I am going to keep monitoring but it appears the oil and filter change may have done it? i had the car serviced by Citroen about the middle of last year but the state of the filter appeared to be pretty miserable and may (naughty naughty) to have not been changed at that time.
