Appetite for Parkings sensor

Post by Dane »

I've had my C5 III Touring for a couple of years now. It's a 2010 Exclusive with 165.000km on it. I've had three p-sensors dying over these couple of years that I've owned the car. So the question is, is it within the acceptable that I have to replace sensors at that rate? I live in a wooded area with about 1.5km of dirt road that I drive several times a day year 'round. Will the mucky at winter and dusty at summer environment have an impact on the sensors longevity?

Best regards

I don't think it should be normal, one failure over such a mileage should be acceptable, but anything more that that implies some other electrical issue on the car (especially if the three that died weren't on the same location)

I had a similar issue on the Mk2 saloon. Constant failing of one, then the other at the back mostly. I ended up replacing 3 in 6 months.
Problem in my case was water ingress. The water can run back off the wiring and trickle back into the sensors causing them to fail. The solution was to a) very carefully tape up around the wiring plug and try to seal this as best as possible and b) as far as possible, to 'redirect' the wiring from the sensors so any water would drop down and away from the plug and sensor area. The expense of getting these replaced at this rate kicked me into doing something about it.

I wonder if it might be worth dripping a load of hot candle wax onto the point where the wiring enters the sensors, to help waterproof them further (and then applying the tape).

Well that's another option I suppose! :-D The sensor wiring on some vehicles can be slightly raised above the sensor height, so any water thrown up into the area would run down the wire and into the plug / sensor. These things are über sensitive and don't like knocks or water for sure, but at £50 a pop you don't want to be replacing 8 of these beauties! :puke:

Thank you very much gents. I'll be sure to relay the information to my mech, and then hope for the best. There is simply too many sensors on the car if they die with the frequency I've seen so far =)

Price range for parking sensors is huge - from 7€ on Aliexpress to 200€ on main stealer.

Not sure I understand what you mean by that. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Um, a bit clearer but still I'm not quite sure.

Are they cheap and nasty... or good value for money by working as well as the expensive ones?

Now it's confirmed that you can get proper parking sensors for X7 for under 10€/piece. 9663821577XT works, don't buy 9663821577 (without that XT), it's not compatible with X7. Changing sensor (at least in the back) is very easy, it takes only two minutes.

I've had a look about the bay, but a bit hit and miss as they say these fit c5s to 2015, but they are either the number without the XT which you said not to get, or there are others without this code just searching, but these are all about the £24 mark and could be Skoda ones. A few others say they are in the UK, but when you look they are shipped from Kong Kong- which really annoys me no end as they shouldn't be able to say they are on the UK when clearly they are not! Oh, and refunds if wrong?... Greater than 30 days after the return which could mean forever. No thanks. :-D
