Quick diesel shutoff question

Post by superloopy »

Guys ... my TD (95 Nreg) decided not to switch off when i removed the keys just now. Engine kept going??? First time in 21 years! Felt strange to be sitting with the keys in my hand and was about to get out when i realised the engine was still running. Key back in, on and off ok. Impending sign of what? More importantly how can i switch off if it happens again?

Change the solenoid? Sadly not if it's armour protected, otherwise yes a cinch. Probably just de-gumming would be sufficient though.

Yep, I concur. Gum on the stop solenoid plunger.. Seen it in the past on pumps running veg. and having been out of use for a bit...

Run a bit of diesel fuel system treatment through it...

Although the Bosch pump on my '95 TD is not identical to the above image, the solenoid is in the same place, and has no armour around it, & I'm assuming Xantiamanic's is like mine. I think the armouring came in later.

Just be careful not to get any dirt ingress, when removing/refitting the solenoid.

Stall it - foot on brake, put in a high gear and let clutch up. Happened with my first BX, but so rarely that I never tried to fix it.

Thanks people. Mine's not got a keypad so is it simply unscrew and replace? It's behaving itself again now but i'll get a replacement fitted.

Never stall a diesel if you can help it.. It can tear the centre out of the clutch! Use the emergency stop lever on the pump:

This shows the stop lever on the non-turbo Bosch but it's the same for the Turbo pump. Push in the direction of the arrow to stop...

Might be worth a dash of paint, or tape, on the lever, so it can be found easily, and maybe in the dark. Not something that gets used too often.

Yes, and indeed, always a good idea too to test it occasionally..

This particularly applies to Lucas DPC pumps where the emergency stop lever can seize due to lack of use!

If its now behaving id just check the feed wire.. If the wire insulation has rotted away on the wire and is sleeved with another that picks up 12v thats enough to keep the solinoid open and keep the engine going.

Had this on an xm. The stop wire was sleeved with the altinator battery warning lamp wire and both wires had rotted insulation.. So it was feeding the solinoid and kept the engine running. Just a thought though im aware xantia wiring harnesses were of a better quaility then XMs..

How does that stop lever work? Can it do any damage when used? I'm going to swapout the solenoid as a first step but does it just pull out? Any precautions to take here. Dont really want to leave my load lugger disabled through my incompetence which is more than a possibility here [emoji5]

It works by closing the governor right down so the HP pumping element cannot be filled with fuel... It's akin to slowing the idle down to zero via the governor...

Using it can cause no damage whatsoever Mike...
