Yep -hard to tell without stripping what's in the pumps that are similar and what components are different. Still amazed that these Mk3 X7 pumps cost so much compared to the Mk 1 & 2s. I mean that part was up for £450 second hand!

I know a few guys have just changed the armature and motor in some cases so it may be that part that is similar in MK1 and 2. Maybe a pump that feeds 4 spheres is lower power than one that feeds a 6 sphere model. Safer with same part numbers if pumps are a few shillings.
Hopefully the pump will bring back the "magic carpet ride" that i experienced in a mk2,i bought the car mainly for the individual looks as they are not your usual euro box and i can always see it in a busy car park as it looks different to all the other audi/vw/ford cars.Hopefully this one will be a keeper if (when i iron out the teething problems) .Anyways thanks for all the advice and hopefully some of my problems will help fellow members decipher the inigma code that is the citroen suspension :)

I have had a couple of C5s - the first one coincidentally bought exactly nine years ago today.
Never had any suspension problems with either of them (until now, of course)
I'm sure the current car is on its original spheres too, at over 208,000 miles, and it doesn't get mollycoddled - speed bumps are completely ignored.

UPDATE TIME.Now i am a full time member of the school of wafting, job took about 2 1/2 hrs and involved draining tank/removing wheel arch liner(steering on full lock so no need to remove wheel) remove low pressure rubber pipe/remove 2 copper high pressure pipes with "o"rings/unplug power and data connectors.
Fit new pump and reconnect all plumbing and top up with fluid, turned engine on on pump ran smoothly but would not range so raised and lowered car on lift and bled front and rear and now works perfectly.
Paid £150.00 to mechanic and am very happy as pump stood me at £345.00 so not bad for under £500.00.
There are a couple of metal pipe connectors that clamp the rubber hose and these were reused instead of jubilee clips but took about 20 mins to fit but as they are hidden below fluid tank was worth it for peace of mind.Lexia was not used and car ranges perfectly and no air in system.
All that was needed was 2 spanners and a pair of pliers so easily a diy job.

Smooth but the front height adjuster needs adjusting as at the back it should be 40cm which it is but the front is 44cm so will need to be on a ramp for that,it was adjusted before the pump was changed and we know the old pump was knackered.
Goes up and down now with just a hum from the new pump :) Now i can get back to enjoying the car.

So its been a week tomorrow since the pump was replaced and to sum it up in one word WOW ,went to hospital with wife & son yesterday and it was like speed bump city so i said to my son "goes over the bumps well" his reply was "tell me when you do?"(this was when we'd been over 2 already!
Some people probably may not like the floaty ride "as you don't get much feel for the road and can't tell the grip levels etc etc typical AUDI/BMW logic but driven responsibly the car does what it says on the tin and thats wafting.................

Apart from the extra functions of H3+, is there a consensus that 6 sphere C5 is more comfortable than a basic 4 sphere?
I have had the 6 sphere on Xantia's but memory is not good for comparisons.

This is the 1st citroen i've owned and so far impressed with ride comfort however many spheres there are?I used to have a saab hot aero estate and you know the suspension was hard when you go round a corner slow and the back end does'nt feel "right" and after travelling 8 miles you notice the flat rear tyre!!!!!Was fast in a straight line and the seats were comfy but not to clever at going round corners?

It's the other way around for me - being able to activate Sports mode for going round tight country lanes is almost a necessity here otherwise passengers wobble from side to side at anything over 30mph! Having the 6 spheres just allows more variation between the comfort and sport mode as needed and according to conditions IMO.
