I've had a few 1.6hdi both being the c5 one the facelift, and the one I have now X7.
In my experience I've had no issues, regarding the turbo (touch wood).
If they are regularly serviced and looked after then there shouldn't be any worries, I service mine at 6k intervals. I understand that some people think they are under powered etc and are put off by they chances they could be dud, but if you take your time you should be able to get a decent one.

Thanks again everyone. I think what I'll do is have a look at a C3 picasso and check whether it's going to be big enough for us. If it is, the hunt will start... My wife has a Honda Civic hybrid. When that goes, it'll be replaced by a c1

Ive got a c5 face lift 1.6 hdi vtr with cruise.. its had a clutch and dmf at 100k at a cost of 720 quid.. the bill is there... there is nothing wrong with these wrongly procived and accused of being crap engines... mine now on 160k and going up quickly! Its actually rather sprightly and quick.. and averages around 50mpg .. the issue with them is the crap injector clamp bolts that rattle loose.. if you have the correct ear and KNOW when to tell an injector is blowing past its seal jump on it and tighten it up it will help.. they dont blow turbos for fun they go for a reason and its useually carbon from loose injectors coupled with poor injector tube top seals letting the carbon in. I heard a 1.6 a few weeks ago sounding like a steam engine it was blowing that bad.. I pulled the owner up and he couldnt even tell. After I spoke to him he was greatfull and asked how much id charge to do it... I couldnt and wouldnt for time reasons.

my bottom line.. buy a 1.6 ... if its had a turbo and it all sounds good with no compression leaks keep on top of the injector clamps.. check them at every service.. use only low saps/ash oil for the dpf and dont use it for town work (which you wont be) it will be good!

I was a big 1.6 disliker... but now.. after working on them (all very easy! ) and owning one they are a very missunderstood.. compact .. powerfull .. good engine that just needs the little extra attention.

More good advice. I am more and more tempted to risk a well cared for circa 2009 1.6. If it's got a fsh, I service it properly, remove the turbo feed filter and check the injector tension, shouldn't I have a reasonable chance of reliability?!
