Xantia questions

Post by daviemck2006 »

The activa started making a racket steering on full lock. Would this mean it needs it's green blood topped up? Is the level indicator supposed to be checked with the engine running and suspension on high? Does the activa have passive rear steering? When pushing it a bit more, as I turn into a corner it feels like it's going to lose the back momentarily then settles into the corner and grips like glue. Is this normal?

Dave,

the vague steering maybe worn track rod ends, The noise in the rack could be low LHM but could also be other problems

To check the level, with engine running , raise suspension to high and brass disc on orange float should be btn both lines on LHM tank.

If low top up and allow to settle. Also do a bit of citrobotics.

It's not vague Kenny, just noisy, like a pump running dry. Only started when I reversed I to the drive about 9pm. I shall check it in the morning.

I thought it was the ORANGE disk that was meant to indicate the level, with the car parked on level ground and the suspension on service high. The brass disk is there to provide the electrical link between two contacts should the LHM drop too low.

If you haven't started doing so, I would do a Citrobics session every month or so, to keep the suspension supple and moving freely. It takes about 30 minutes, and consists of going from service high to service low, with a minute at these heights to allow things to settle down. To give the rear brakes a workout keep the brake pedal firmly presses as you switch between heights, and then, when the nose has stopped moving, release the pedal and hold on; the rear height will rapidly adjust!

All Xantia's have passive rear steering in the form of rubber bushes between the body and suspension chassis.

It's not unknown for the bushes to wear out which can lead the to the rear end getting a little tail happy! One of the Xantia's that used to be in the family (not mine) was somewhat twitchy at the back on the limit despite good tyres - I always put it down to worn rear passive steering bushes, although we never attempted to replace them.
