Hi Neil -
The Czeck CCC site offers loads of schematic drawings on the XM - amongst here quite a few on the hydraulics system :
http://citroeny.cz/servis/xmser/xm.html
Note that this server is often overloaded - which means you get a Czeck language Microsoft error message on server not accessible.
This may try your patience somewhat [:I]
The rear subframe/suspension construction on the XM is a mix of the principles found on the CX & BX.
The rear arms themselves are identical to the CX - except for the clamping method on the roll-bars inner bolt on to the arm. (CX has an offset clamp on rollbar - XM has a bolt thru the rollbar).
The rear suspension cylinder fitting in the subframe is of similar design as the BX (& Xantia) - with the suspension cylinder loose fit in an orifice - clamping the cylinder against the frame with applied system pressure/weight on wheels.
The rear suspension cylinders should be exactly identical each side.
I can't see why not - as they are identical both sides on BX,CX & Xantia.

cheers anders
i'll swop them over tomorrow
the fault is the suspension on one side is rock hard
changed the sphere and it is exactly the same
but the car goes up and down as normal its solid even in the second notch (from bottom)on the lever
it's also dumping loads of oil through leak off pipe(plastic)when in maximum height is that normal?
just changed loads of suspension parts, front struts, pump, brake valves, pipes etc.
just wondering if it could be contamination in a valve or something.
the car was alright after but came to it next day to bleed rear brakes(car not getting used yet)and it was solid, very strange
anyway i'll have another go tomorrow see what i find then
cheers again

Sounds like the piston comes into contact with the bore wall in that cylinder - and then leaks.
Probably either grit or rusty piston.

hi
just to finish a story off
the rod between the ram and radius arm had snapped and punched it's way through the rubber gaiter
so when i was lifting it to full height the piston was actually coming out of the cylinder
had to buy a new one from cit at £126.89p
get it tomorrow so hopefully that'll be the suspension sorted
then i've just got the occaisional misfire under hard acceleration to sort
