C15 1.7 D starting problems

Post by robpam17 »

I have been running a 1992(K) C15 pickup for 6 months with no problems until my son had the car and ran low on oil and fuel and it stopped I put oil in and changed the fuel filter and it will not start ,it will crank the glow plugs are all ok (tested with meter and tryed out of engine they glow hot )if I tow the car it will start (in 3rd gear ) and tick over ok and drive ok but if I stop it it will not start on the key.Could it be (a) compression?(b) timing belt slipped (dont't know when it was changed ,it's do 80,000+ miles it looks slitly cracked on the outside of the belt) (c) starter motor not enough speed of crank (have charged battery). Would appriciate any idea's on this .Thanks Bob

Bob
This vehicle should not be using any oil at 80K miles. Mine has 84K on the clock and I've run many other XUD diesels close to 100K miles without oil consumption problems.
It's strange that it suddenly used oil when your son used it, or was it already low? If the glow is OK and it will tow start then it sounds like compression (valves or rings) but at that mileage, it's weird. Could it have been clocked before you got it?

When you changed the fuel filter can you be sure that you got all the joints in the fuel lines and the filter air tight. If the glo-plugs are OK and it starts after being towed, but becomes reluctant to start after standing, it could point to air in the fuel lines. Replace the line from the filter to the pump with clear plastic. You'll then see any air bubbles.

gazoo,
Get the compression test done asap. By the sounds of things it is a foregone conclusion that the motor is losing compression somewhere. These diesels don't take kondly to overheating so there is a chance that it may have a cracked head also.
As a forerunner to the compression test, I'd ring Andyspares & check on price & availability of a VRS gasket set as well as get a price from a wrecker on a second hand head at which time you can find out who has one on hand & for what price.
To do the job properly, get a motor reconditioner to crack test the head, either yours or the replacement, before refitting, as well as check for levelness, cut seats & face valves & also change the cam belt and water pump at the same time. That way being a PSA diesel engine, it'll probably last longer than you will <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> providing there's no damage done to the motors bottom end.
