C5 Mk1 TPMS upgrade

Post by BSC »

My last car had TPMS, so I appreciate the benefit. My 2004 C5 doesn't have it, but given that upgrades to the C5 are so easy, I wonder if it's possible to add TPMS? I'm guessing that an ECU and wheel sensors will be required, but where does the TPMS ECU live? Anyone performed this upgrade?

Cheers

You will also need an exciter (or take it somewhere where they have one), as the system need to 'learn' each tyre.

I dont believe the mk1 has a seperate ECU as its just a very basic system. The sensor signals are recieved by the com2000 unit. Ive never done it but in theory it should just be a case of fitting the sensors, reconfiguring the BSI to have tpms then activating & programing the sensors.
The mk2 has a totally different setup & has a seperate ECU.

Where would the warning be on the dash?
I think the X7 TPM, ECU resides in the spare wheel well in the boot.....possibly

Thanks for the responses!

I have found sensors on Aliexpress, so I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you know the outcome.....

The warning message comes up on the central display, would only work fro the level 2 dash upwards.

Cheers for that, I just wondered how it was going to be displayed, and where.

On my C4 VTS (which I think is similar)I no longer have the wheel sensors as I have aftermarket wheels. I have toyed with replacing them, but was unsure if they'd fit in the new wheels. I am not sure if the C5 is the same as the C4 in that mine has sensors clipped to each wheel arch liner and wired into the loom. (I discovered these when I had to replace the front liners due to a meeting with a small furry animal) I imagine this part would not be fitted to a lower spec model and would be very expensive to add. Have you checked if yours needs these?

Would it not be simpler to use Tyrepal or similar. I have them fitted to my caravan wheels and the temperatures and pressures of both tyres are shown on a small device attached to the dashboard. Any loss of pressure is indicated by an alarm initially.

That sounds very good, but if the OP is anything like me, he will want the inegrated system!

Yes, I'm afraid I'm a bit of a nerd. Integrated all the way.

Here is a pic of it on the C4, it clips to a moulded lug on the arch liner

I must be out of step with you guys, as I don't want TPMS (and some other technology stuff) - just more to go wrong :( I've driven for 50 years without it, and the likes of ABS. Aircon might be nice to have in the winter.

Have I seen reference to TPMS being included in the MoT if it's a standard fitment - just another expenditure when it needs fixing :(
