Knock Knock - Droplinks or wishbone bushes?

Post by chinkostu »

Got an irritating knock going over bumps in the Xantia now. sounds exactly like droplinks but they were replaced earlier in the year. getting under the wheel arch and wobbling stuff around doesn't bring much joy, there seems to be a smidge of play in the rear wishbone bush but no knocking noise when agitated, and the droplinks don't knock if i grab them and rattle them about. however if i grab the roof and rock the car you can hear it knocking like a...well you know the euphanism :rofl2:

As already noted, cheapo droplinks can be shot in a matter of months. Could it be lower ball joint?

I had similar noises which turned out to be the lower ball joint and it was fun replacing that ! Couldn't spot it until I had both front wheels off the ground with axle stands under the front jacking points.

Ah so it could well be the droplinks. Bit of a bugger but at least they'll be easy to swap out given they're fairly new. Strange that I cant feel the play as on a friends punto it had a noticeable knock when you grabbed the rod.

I've fitted cheap ones that knocked out of the box....

If you can hear it when rocking it, it's the drop links - ones on our Picasso were like that. I fitted the Mylele ones nearly 2 years ago, and still quiet.

Even with quite a loud knock, there's sometimes only just discernable play in the droplinks when they've been removed. You'd never feel it on the car.

Just a thought, check out the inner steering rods .. mine had quite a bit of play and I was on the point of buying new drop links as I discovered the track rod play.. made a lot of noise especially over potholes.

Certainly with my particular Xantia, the drop link part numbers were the same as the Peugeot 106 and there were a few listings for genuine Peugeot 106 bagged ones on eBay going cheap!
