Oil from EGR

Post by c.morewood »

Anyone come across this before? I was changing the track rod and noticed this oil? leak which seems to emminating from the EGR valve.. can't see anything leaking above that.
Image
Any idea what would be causing it? Its a very small leak, just spread out over time..no noticeable loss on the dipstick a small amount on the sump. I assumed it was a sump weep until I saw that.
Sorry about the orientation. EGR valve at the top

No, a very new one on me...

I'd have thought it would have come from the inlet side so the leak will be on that side and the oil is what's running down the side...

It's more likely to be coming from somewhere else and being blown up around there by the wind.

No there's definately more oil the higher you go and it splits into several streams as it works its way down..I've got a couple of days off now and the weather is pants so hopefully i'll get a couple of hours in the garage to investigate further.

There's no oil at the EGR, so if from above, can only really be the rocker cover - unless it's oil from the intake tract leaking out somewhere, or back through the EGR valve. Although oil leaking from the head gasket (an XUD norm!) makes a right old mess, but that is further down. Could be a pressure leak from the turbo oil feed I suppose?

Where's the oil pressure switch on that engine? If it's in that area it could be that.

It's on the other side, the front of the engine. As far away as it's just about possible to get!

Could this be oil mist being blown out of the inlet tract somewhere down-stream of the turbo-charger and the EGR just happens to be in the line of fire?

The Green Lady for a long time had a mystery weep apparently from the hose joining the plastic tube from the inter-cooler to the inlet manifold; eventually turned out to be a split in the inlet pressure sensor pipe (the small dia one that goes to pressure sensor the injection pump). Replaced the split pipe - clean engine and performance transformed!

I had a quick look this morning the EGR was covered in black sooty oil. I cleaned it off with brake cleaning spray and tissue. then I took the pipe off the actuator and tried to get the EGR to move under vacuum, but no joy so then I sprayed a small amount of plus gas onto the spindle.. still no joy.. then I got my hands dirty and released it with a small amount of pressure .. underneath was absolutely covered in this oily sooty stuff which reminded me of the soft carbon you get round a blowing injector melted with cellulose thinners. I cleaned it off as best I could and the EGR now moves under vacuum but I must have got a bit of the crap in the seal as there's a small leak when I suck on the vacuum pipe which wasn't there before. I've given the area a good clean with the brake spray and tissue and I'll keep an eye on it to see if it re occurs.

Just to tie this thread up. I think cleaning the egr allowed it to remain open and caused the
"I have an engine K light on, in limp mode, with a lexia fault of
Permanent Fault inlet manifold pressure sensor coherence with atmospheric pressure. " in the MAF sensor issues thread. I haven't had this fault for 4 weeks and the EGR sems to have cleared and seems to be opening and closing with the vaccum again. but there's still new black tarry stuff around the EGR... and still the mystery.
