3 steps forward and 2 back. The clutch was fixed last night. Feels really good and only £250 labour. But when I got home and engaged reverse gear to put the car in the garage I got a screeching noise and the stop light came on and I found half the lhm on the road. I can only think that a pipe must have been disturbed in the clutch change and its burst. The leak is from the n/s behind the gearbox..im wondering if this could be the steering pipe? Tomorrow ill investigate further after I get her up on carstands.

That's good news then I can be back on the road in a day as I bought a replacement last year exactly for this reason...maybe the holiday in London and Bournemouth is still on.

Fingers crossed Jim..I'll bet that's the first time you've heard of someone being happy about a PAS pipe going!
Now if it is, any tips on changing it please?

Could be the PAS pipe as when they go they dump an impressive amount of LHM out. Mine gave my height corrector a good wash! I was lucky that I could just about make the pipe reach without having to add a new length in

Not really Chris except to say with the engine and 'box out it's dead simple but with everything in-situ it's fiddly...

Attack the pinion valve end through the wheelarch and pull back the pinion valve/steering rack heat-shield as far as it will go...

Have the car high on stands and don't worry too much about following the exact same routing as the original but ensure it's properly secure along its length and cannot chafe anywhere or on anything...

Oh, and 8 inch long steel-tipped fingers are a great advantage :)

I did the job on an Activa and it took about an hour and only a moderate amount of profanity :) I'd expect an HDi to be similar... Same 'box and so on...

Enjoy the holiday Chris

Thanks Jim, the engine and box see definitely staying in place! I'm really going to enjoy the holiday, whether its up here or down south after the last 4 months of doctors and hospital, relaxing anywhere will be good. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow..maybe take some pics if i remember.

I'm trying to follow the pas pipe from the o/s to the nearside. It goes behind and up a load of suspension, pipes but I cant see where it ends up. I'm loath to start taking it apart till I can prove that its the culprit. All the lhm seems to have ended up on the n/s in the space below the lhm tank so maybe that indicates its the end I cant see which has failed..im going to remove the tank and see if I can see the problem.

Chris, the PAS pipe runs up along the N/S chassis rail above the gearbox and then dips down and runs along the leading edge of the subframe and is, as you say, behind and entangled with a load of other pipery...

The other possibility is the pipe that goes into the security valve from the regulator... I'm aware those can chafe on things and as this runs near the gearbox, given the recent work, it may well have gone like that..

The PAS pipe normally lets go where it runs along the chassis leg and often near the rubber bit... Rarely do they go where disappears into the subframe.. It's normally well protected with oily deposits there...

It should be a bit visible with the tank off Chris but you may have to remove the bracket that holds the reservoir and the ABS block to really see it fully.. the security valve is a long thing with four arms with an electrical switch on the end that operates the stop light... The electrical bit is on the bottom and the valve itself sort of hangs down at a jaunty angle..

Leak from under the LHM tank can be the seal in the end of the anti sink valve letting go....

My XM is the 2.5TD Estate and i chuck all sorts of fluids in the tank and still get over 50mpg on average thanks to my nearside lane loving in it.
Cruise control is a godsend when following the lorries, unless they are fully laden and reach the tiniest incline :D

Annoyingly I know it can do more but thanks to the mancunian way in manchester the motorways even 15miles away are suffering massively from it in the morning and evenings still :(
Still im getting over 900miles from a tank which isn't bad for an 80litre tank that maybe gets 83 in it really.

The kicker with Citroen and MPG stats is that remember the good old AX Diesel and its record breaking 100MPG... And now they are trumpeting the C4 Cactus which is barely able to beat it some nearly 26 years later.... What an advancement in technology hey :D :D :rofl2:

Good luck with the steering pipe Chris, i dont envy you having to replace one :(
