Xantia Mk1 driver's window inop

Post by aerodynamica »

Hi all, I'm starting to investigate the non working drivers window on the Xantia. The window is closed and simply doesn't operate. The passenger side works fine from both the passenger door switch and the driver door switch, both rear doors work fine.

I've not had the door panel off yet - that's for the weekend. Haynes book shows the wiring digram and it looks like the LH and RH switches get power from the same connection so the driver window switch is likely getting power. The driver door then has the control unit (for one touch) and a timer/relay. I think the problem must be with either of these or a connection to them but where are they located?

The fuse box has this missing space for something above the green relay - anyone know what it is?
Image

It could be the window motor was disconnected due to broken regulator cable but need to find that out.

Thanks in advance!

The empty space is the diagnostic socket. The clear plastic hose does not look original. I presume that yours does not have a one-touch drivers window switch? Don't take the Haynes diagrams too literally, there were variations.

Pop the surround out from around the handle. Theres a t10 screw underneath the handle then it all pops out. Check the wires are all firmly in the plug, as mine were a bit loose and all pulled out one day (nightmare).

Does the switch light up as if so then it is getting power. The other quick one is put the drivers window plug into the passenger switch, if it doesnt work there you can rule out the switch being at fault.

The doorcards aren't too bad to remove, theres 4 t30 bolts (two in the armrest, one that goes through the armrest at the top into the door and one near the front of the handle (you can't miss them).

After that theres 3 t25 screws under the speaker grille, then yank the armrest until the card unclips, dont forget to unplug the speaker!

From there you'll have the membrane in the way, you can carefully unpeel it but have glue/tape ready for patching it back up.

Hopefully if all is well you'll see any issues!

Thanks chaps, it does have one touch - it's a UK spec SX - this is my third! Yes both switches light up - I'll get a chance over the weekend to remove the door panel.

Well spotted regarding the clear pipe! It's a vacuum pipe for an after market boost gauge fitted by previous owner

The one touch window box is behind the door card right with the plugs on the door. Its incredably unlikely to not be this.....
My bet.. Wires in the plug.. Or window winder disconnected OR a wires between the A Pillar and door in the cable grommet... What you can try with the ignition on is press the down button and at the same time open the door... I had this on a L reg SX.. Wires had broke but moving the door enabled connection in certain positions..

With the door open try pressing the switch and moving the wires at the hinge..it may be that you have a lose wire like mine..ive tied mine into a different position using a cable tie and the top hinge as a temporary fix till I can investigate further.

Will do, yes I had a similar problem with my old SX - the electric mirrors only worked with the door half open. May also have been the problem with the central locking I never did solve...

The driver's window switch usually gets the most use (particularly as it's one-touch) so it's not uncommon for the switch contacts to fail. Usually starts out as being a bit intermittent, gets worse (at which point most people are driven to do something about it - like swapping for a rear door switch), before failing completely. The 'Green Lady' started playing up two or three years after buying her, and the VSX was just starting before it 'died'.

I've got spare switches (tho' not with the 'A' symbol) and even complete door-switch panels if that's any help.

As far as the under-panel relays are concerned, each fitter at the factory put them where he personally fancied - or maybe the layout depends on the day of the week... Whatever the reason, if any, there is no standard layout - see this wiki page

Thanks for the help - not got to the window yet. Just fitted new front disks, LHM change, New battery and terminals new glow plugs and such. Still got the timing belt, tensioners and water pump kit to sort out and then coolant and oil change. A lot of things but it needs them all to be reliable. ( I always do all the usual stuff when the opportunity comes up)

If you've not done this job before (or it was a long time ago), you may find this wiki article helpful.

Hiya, yes I've done it before but was a few years ago - sorted now but it took all day and part of yesterday.. It is worse than on the XM 2.1 TD and 2.0 Turbo petrol ( the XMs I owned) I patched the tensioners though as I would still be there now if I'd changed them too.... the existing ones are smooth rolling and no free play so I think they will be fine. Water pump was different to the out going type as it had a kind of 'wall' in the casting that clashes with the plastic cambelt cover (clip-on early mk1 type) so I had to modify the plastic cover to allow it to fit. also! forgot how hellish it is to get the rod in behind the starter to locate in the flywheel hole.... to think I've done a Xantia 1.9 D and a previous 1.9TD and I
only this time did it occur to me to bent the rod more than it was! (had that XU/TU locking kit for over 10 years..) coolant and oil changed as well, glow plugs, front disks all now done. Drove very smooth on the 25 mile journey back this evening. Still to look at the window but it e certainly doesn't spring to life in any various positions of ajar! Was worth checking though. Will report back soon regarding it
