Xantia Mk1 wheel offset and width

Post by aerodynamica »

Hi all, I am soon to take ownership of another Xantia having sold a CX. It has standard steel wheels and I'm hoping to source a set of 15 or 16" alloys to fit. I'd be happy to find the Citroen alloys for the Mk1 called 'Belfast' wheels but otherwise I'm going to search for a set of aftermarket wheels.

I was checking the site 'Will they fit' http://www.willtheyfit.com but that requires the offset figure for Xantia wheels and I don't know this! Anyone have the number?

Also the wheel width of the Xantia steels, factory alloys and Mk2 wheels (5.5j ?)

Of course, if anyone has a set of Citroen 'Belfast' Alloys (fitted to Mk1 VSX as standard) then I'd be interested!

Also if anyone has a list of known alloys that fit the Xantia I'd be keen to know too. I know some Peugeot wheels are a direct fit but any other marque's wheels fit? And is the centre boss and stud BCD something that needs matching?

Any info warmly received!! :-D

I think maybe Mk1 C5 wheels fit straight to Xantias? The original Exclusive wheels were not too bad looking. Anyway, any info welcomed.

My 1995 TD has 185 x 65 x 15 tyres on steel wheels which are 5 & 1/2J, with ET (this is the offset) = 15mm

FWIW, I'm running the winter tyres on 15" steels off a Xsara Picasso, which are 6J, with ET = 18mm, with no clearance problem.

On both the Xantia & the Picasso, the ET is imprinted with other details on the inside of the wheel - if rusty, a bit of emery should reveal all.

The S1 (Mk1) VSX alloys are 15" x 6J, while ordinary S1 Alloys and steels are 5½J (5.5J).
The 'Green Lady' wears VSX wheels in the summer, and in winter, her original steel rims shod with a set of Goodyear Ultragrip 8 winter tyres. I've not had any problems though of course it's important to remember to also swap the spares and use the correct bolts (taper fit for the steel set and flat face with captive washers for the 'alloy' set (including the matching spare).

Hi all, thanks for your help. It's something for the coming year as I have a number of jobs to do to the car to get it 'good', namely change the dark LHM, bleed the back brakes, investigate the front end pulsing through the steering wheel while traveling (slightly sticking calipers I think), more worrying is the clutch judder pulling away - I have to get the revs up to avoid it (might be engine mounts but could be a broken clutch spring), refit a strut gaiter, get the driver's door window working, replace the oil, coolant, fuel and oil filters, fuel line. O, and change the cambelt and water pump.... just a few little things then.. But i might send you a PM Tim to see what we can maybe sort out? Thanks all, Graeme

The centre diameter and the stud PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) must be the same. Imagine a circle with the centre of all the stud holes on it, that's the PCD. The centre diameter has to be the same otherwise the wheel won't fit onto the raised central ring of the hub.

Generally speaking, vehicle manufacturers 'invent' their own limited range of wheel specifications and use these across all the makes and models that they manufacture (Citroen and Peugeot are the same group). Wheels from a completely different manufacturer won't fit, so it's no good looking at Ford or Jaguar wheels!
...refit a strut gaiter...
That sounds a bit ominous; a gaiter that won't stay on the underside of the strut mount is the classic sign of a failing strut mount (top).

No worries Grahame, the tyres aren't great but the wheels are ok.

Thanks all, yes the strut tops are ok - the strut gaiter gets clogged with gunge in the lower fixing that's meant to allow the strut to turn with steering but the gunge jams it and the strut gaiter twists and pops off the top fixing and then gets caught and deformed by the top of the strut when the car sinks - deforms so doesn't refit properly at the top any more.
