Citroen Xantia 2.0l H.D.i. Exhaust

Post by stevestix8 »

Hi All,

Been a while since I last posted, all good with my car, still keeping it going and am liking it alot, is still one of the best cars I have ever had.

Is M.O.T. time again (Oct/Nov) and am well ahead of it this year. Got a free mot with my Kwik Fit insurance policy for the year.

Took it in early for a pre mot and apart from 2 tyres, it will also need a centre section for the exhaust (as far as I know the exhaust is original and the car is over 17 yr old now, there is obvious blowing when it was up in the air, and 2 old & rusted clamps). He quoted £170 with clamps and fitted.

I have just had a look on line (Eurocarparts) and I can buy the part (Klarius Centre silencer) for £54.60. Will need 2 clamps (Klarius exhaust clamp) for £1.38 each.

Will I also need gaskets? if so how many? Any advice from anyone who replaced their exhaust? £170 odd seems a bit steep to me when I can do it myself for about £60.

Mine has been without a cat for 12 years as a '99 reg it doesn't need one.. Earlier this year, as the center section was blowing, I had a Stainless center section made up as a straight through pipe from the manifold, leaving just the new rear box which I fitted myself.
I spent £200 on the pipe and £37 on the rear box. The mpg has never been better and the engine seems to accelerate better without the middle box.
I would be doing it myself Steve, if you have the ramps and axle stands to do it.
Use Plusgas, about £8 from Eurocarparts to free the rusty clamps and a bit of exhaust paste to seal the joints on reassembly.
Good luck.

Check out these guys, IIRC last time I checked a complete HDI system was less than quickfit want to charge you for one section. This is the reason you get the 'free' MOT.

One other point to look out for is the diameter of the pipe.

On the 110 HDI it's 60mm dia but on the 90HDI it's 54mm dia. It has been known for the wrong one to be supplied to the detriment of power output and worse mpg. :(

Hi all,

Good advice, many thanks.

After realising I could get the parts and do all myself for half the price of Kwik fit, we ended up asking a garage in Stroud, they said they could supply and fit the exhaust, and 2 x tyres for £140.00. Was a good deal and better it's done up in the air, so went for that.

It turns out not all the exhaust was original, had a look back through history and it had rear exhaust (with rear silencer) section in 2007 and new cat in 2009. So assumed it had to be the 60mm 110 bhp exhaust, which it was.

Have kept the cat as is working fine and is better for emissions, then new centre section (with centre silencer). Then the 2 tyres it needed.

All fitted well and the car was sounding (quiet as it was) and performing better than it has for a long time.

Took it for the free mot @ Kwik-Fit at 3.00 pm today. It passed!

Have had it 5 yrs and it is the 1st time I have got it through 1st time. That's it mot'd for 1 day short of 13 months. Happy days.

Thanks again for relevant input,

Cheers,

Steve
