Help - strut tops competability

Post by lancia58 »

Hi

I may need to replace the left strut top on my S2 2.0 16v Auto Xantia. I found at a local dealer a used one in a good condition, that it's Citroen part number is 5271E1. I check on Citroen service if this fits my car. When I searched for this part for my car it does refer me to the "FRONT SUSPENSION CYLINDER SPHERE" parts, but there the part number is 5271F5, and I can not see the 5271E. I do notice that 5271F5 is actually three items the strut top itself and two o-rings. Can it be that 5271F5 is actually 5271E1+the two o-rings. Will the 5271E1 fit my car ?

The car's VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Thanks
Zohar

You may find the table on the wiki helpful: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/wiki/Xa ... ount_table

As to interchangeability, that is not so clear. You should check the strut diameter and the hydraulic fitting type before assuming a direct interchange..

According to Citroen Service...

5271E1 is a Left Hand Strut Top for a non-Hydractive Xantia up to RP 08208 and the on from RP 08519

5271F5 is a special Left Hand one just for RPs between 08209 and RP 08518

I believe 5271F5 has a bigger pipe inlet union thread.

So, if your RP number is right for 5271E1 then it'll be god for your car Zohar.

All new Strut Tops come with the necessary O rings...

Hi

The RP of my Xantia is 08432. So should I just drill the inlet union thread to the be the same as the one in the 5271F5 ? BTW what is the reason Citroen uses so many different strut top ?
Is there any information source for the differences between the various strut tops ?

Thanks

You could Zohar.. I believe yours has a 9mm (M9) thread whereas the rest have an M8 thread but check first!

Thanks Jim and Zohar, another little puzzle solved and the relevant Wiki pages corrected.

Zohar, I suggest that before you have the new mount re-tapped, you check the thread pitch of the pipe fitting (gland-nut) because it may not be standard ISO. Can you then post the actual pitch please?

Can anyone tell me for certain what is the thread pitch of these 8mm gland-nuts please?

I believe it's standard M8 ISO-Metric coarse Guy..

The 9mm ones - normally used with 4.5mm pipes - are, I believe from memory, M9 which is a very unusual thread size.. I have a tap for it and the pitch I believe is 1.25mm...

Thank you Jim.

From somewhere, I know not where, I collected the daft idea that the M8 was 1.5 pitch! Re-reading this today, I realised that this was very unlikely - hence my pleas.

Hi

For a correct thread pitch value I'll have to use a Thread Gauge which at the moment I do not have. Hope to get one and post the correct value

Thanks
