C5 Cambelt Kit

Post by lexi »

I am fitting an SKF cambelt kit to Donk ATM. I notice that the deflection pulley roller is about 5mm narrower than the OE item.
The OE item had a groove in the centre of it's steel roller. It seems to have been made a bit wider than the cam belt to give a margin for running off. This one ( stamped skf) has a plastic roller and is only a touch wider than belt. Anyone used these kits or noticed this on other kits?
I don't expects 0E standards of course as kit was only £65 for belt ,two pulleys and a W/P. but hope that it is going to do the job.

As far as I'm aware Citroen fit gates cambelt kits. As gates use skf pensioners in their kits there should be no difference. I would not fit a plastic, slightly differently sized tensioner in the place of a metal one myself.

It is the same as this one which is actually SKF. http://www.amazon.co.uk/SNR-Timing-Belt ... B00GHYWT3O

In all of the kits I have looked at except PSA ones, this "reel roller" as CS calls it, is plastic. They all seem to be 30mm wide. The old one (skf) is 34mm wide and steel roller. Maybe SKF have changed the item and this is what you get now? ..........even at main dealer? The new one centres ok . Mind you the other roller/tensioner on cambelt is only 30mm wide #-o . Parts are a minefield. I bought a Febi tensioner for aux belt. The good news is that it was a Dayco item, the same as old original one.

I used an SKF kit on my MK1 and the roller was indeed plastic and 30mm wide, it worked fine with no issues and was going strong when i sold the car on. I must admit i yearn for some metal parts in cars these days, i think there are certain things that need to remain more resilient and not be made of plastic, water pump impellers and slave cylinders fall into this catergory.

The pulley which came off my 2005 2ltr C5 which was the original is sitting on a shelf in the garage. That's 30mm wide and made from plastic

That is interesting John. So maybe the plastic has improved. I don't think steel can be beaten for doing big miles though.
I have always though that OE stuff on the car when bought would last maybe 100k plus. That will be the spec and they will have 4 or five companies who have or will make that stuff fior them. When they make an aftermarket quality kit, they have no need for it to last that time again. Most of the cars would be finished. So I think it only need to be good enough for say 40 or 50k. I don't think they will get many complaints if their aftermarket stuff lasts that long, even if made by OEM.
Course you can still search out better quality, like Contitech kits or main dealer stuff. You do pay more.......sometimes a lot more.
