Xantia chrome door trims - removal - now fitted

Post by Xantia97 »

Hi All,
Probably a stupid question, sure I'm missing the obvious :-D
How do I remove the 'chrome' strips from the door trims? I've got the whole moulded trim off the car and have Brian Pimmer's steel trims to go in, but apart from moving one of the chrome trims a quarter of an inch I'm no further forward  Do I prise the strips out from the front of the trim or slide them out from the back?
Any other tips on this job gratefully received :)

They just clip on to a rail, they just unclip with a trim lever/screw driver with care.

I can take some photos after the weekend if you like ?

What are the trims like, good I hear.

Thanks, got them off, knew I was missing the obvious!!

Haven't unwrapped the new trims yet - Brian sends them on a piece of plywood - don't want to risk bending them. Will post a photo when they are done.

Yes, the chrome inserts are available via a CCC member, he makes them in Stainless steel.

Another option is (talked about it this weekend at a show) to use quality 3M Chrome wrap over the originals, the material is very very good.
The "Wrapper" guy however recommends/prefers to do it in his unit rather than produce a kit to fit.....
His plan would be to ship the strips to him to do the application, I see a big problem with this as shipping the F'nt/Back bumper ones could be problematic due to the size of them.

As you are where you are, I would think the best and fastest option would be to find a car wrapper place locally, remove the strips yourself and drop them off with them to wrap.

Nice...does he do the bumper strips too? One of mine has just started to go, curious to have a conversation about the Saab too which uses almost identical strips and has a few in need of replacing...

Ok, so I've finally taken some photos of the new stainless steel strips.

Would I do it again? Not on a white car with painted bumpers etc. Firstly the strips are wider than the originals (0.5mm) and so had to lie on an angle and wouldn't fit through the spaces at the ends without cutting the plastic - this was expected from the instructions supplied but using a round file as instructed I think caused more damage, I resorted to using a craft knife - cutting from the back but viewing from the front as I did so. I have touching up to do with paint where I cut away the plastic and where the steel cut the paint while sliding through. (Not very good photos)

You don't have to slide the steel through from one end to the other, I found I could VERY GENTLY flex the steel strips so I could slide one end in and then the other from the front side, the strip goes through the spaces far easier at a 45 degree angle then gently coaxed flat and pushed into place. Because I could do this it meant that I could add loads of adhesive on the front side of the plastic then put the steel strip in place and not rely on the little I could squeeze through the holes (that used to hold the original trim) from the back. The holes are very small so on half of them I cut out the central bar to give more access for adhesive.

I wonder whether if the bumpers etc. were black and not painted the strips would have fitted perfectly, and no touching up would be needed.

They do look very good, don't get me wrong, and I think Brian has done a great service for Xantias, just thought I would share my experience. Of course now the front and rear trims look a little dull, there is no corrosion yet but I assume the plastic has become dull, so any tips for improving that?

Very interested in the 'wrapping' idea, how does it stand up to stone chips?

As it is "soft" it does well. In fact it is in clear form, used to protect paint so I do not see that as a problem for it.
Water sealing on the rear edge is the important thing, once down and tight/trimmed, I would think a spread cover of sealant would be good to seal the adhesive edge.

The side strips do look good and they seem to of got to you quickly, gj Brian
