shame the independent hasn't got a loan car this would push him to get on with it because he would need the loan car back for other customers. Did you think to ask if he has a loan car until the job is done?
This is partly why I got a 2cv it has been a real life saver this year. £80 fully comp insurance.

It has been more and more difficult to book at independents mainly because over the recession they started to work on all makes of cars to make ends meet.

They certainly are, there's only a handful round here that don't charge by the hour, there's one citroen specialist who charges in the region of £45-£50 per hour, I did use him in the early days when there was no per hour rate, then found another citroen specialist literally down the road and he's been superb at fitting me in almost same day and he's negotiable, but he's sadly away. I contacted a Blackburn specialist and he unfortunately didn't have the specialist tool for the pipe repair, Dave ashworth in blackpool can do the job but not ill end of week and he also reminded me of Malcolm at Savoy he can most likely sort it out on Thursday and supply a courtesy car (hope its an XM) but I've got to travel 25 miles to get to him or 15 miles for dave ashworth who's quoted £65 +vat.

I also visited the citroen stealership and they had no idea when I showed them the pic of the leaking pipe even the photo's that Rory kindly posted but they did look at it straight away on the ramps without me booking it in. So I'm swaying towards Malcolm as he's worked on the car once before, it's the painful journey of risking driving there I could cause more problems or damage something else, literally after topping up to correct level the light starts flickering after 5 minutes then on constantly after a further 10 mintues, once the cars in motion say on a motorway would there be less leakage as the road surface is smoother and there's less movement of the steering wheel or am I talking a load of blocks (I'm clinging on to this car).

Would breakdown recovery take the car all the way to Hapton even though there is a local specialist that can do the work in home town but not straight away?
:( :( :( :

hope this helps. fortunately my breakdown company will take my car there for me
at no extra charge. but a tip always helps to persuade them. next time.
stick the lever between the seats in the top slot and check the level on the lhm tank to see how much lhm has been lost don't want it affecting your brakes or suspension whilst driving. monitor the level a bit to make sure the leak hasn't got any worse. if it gets bad buy a 5 litre bottle of lhm and stop and check the level regularly every 5 miles top up if needed.
avoid full lock on the steering if possible. until repaired.

regards.
Nigel.
Spoke to Phil at Pleiades on Monday and he advised if I can take of the full part and mail over to him he can get it repaired and sent back within a day or two cost £40 repair £10 shipping.

rory_perrett wrote:It depends on how corroded your pipe is and where. I had one fail where the metal pipe goes into the flexible one (as per photo above) and the pipe in the photo was changed because it was picked up by the MOT man as corroded in the same place as yours. The MOT man thought it was a brake pipe and as there was a fail for some welding as well I decided not to argue and just change it. In the end the rust is not that bad, just needs a clean up and paint hence why I have kept it.

Anyway back to the point in hand. If it is only the middle section that is corroded and the pipe into the flexy is OK one of these hydraulic pipe repair places might be able to sort out a repair, whether they can/ are prepared to do it with the pipe on the car is another matter. If the bad bit can be cut out and the ends on the pipe flared then a new piece of pipe can be let in.
Same problem when I first bought the car, Kwik fit was open on a Saturday booked in for MOT (manager friend of my brothers) all went ok apart from when it came to the braking test and pipework, I told the MOT chap twice the handbrake was on the rear and he still placed the front wheels on the roller and then asked me if the brakes where on the rear (YEEESSSS =D>) Still he couldn't apply the brakes properly and I already told him I'd had new discs/pads for almost 5-6 weeks, ended up taking car after manager agreed no charge. My local cit specialist got the vehicle taken by local MOT garage that knows about citroens with hydraulics and passed even with the rusty pipes. I'm hoping to take to Malcolm at savoy just need to call him Wed morning to agree time and make sure there's four wheels for me to back home in (XM please :) :) )

If I was to get 3.5mm or 4mm microbore copper pipe or citroen pipe(eurocarcare.net) and compression fittings would that cure the leak temporarily or longer, (gas safe friend owes me a favour)

Xantia was dropped off at Malcolm's (Savoy) and no he didn't give me an XM to go back home in but a gold Picasso (nice diesel runner) so I'm hoping Malcolm can do some kung fu magic on the pipes and sort it out, Before I set off from home, I topped up with the left over LHM of 3/4 and disc was just above middle, drove to local parts shop for LHM, none, drove to second shop and again none (but they had hydraulic fluid in yellow comma bottle and did say citroen on the back but no LHM mentioned on front so I gave it a miss) last shop otherwise buggered, LHM available comma at £6 per bottle picked up 2.
I only drove 2 miles from home and to the last parts store in total 13 minutes and it took a litre to get it in middle, on the motorway the Stop light never bothered me once and I got the Hapton without trouble as soon as I parked up outside the unit it started dribbling. Any how I hope Malcolm has good news to offer when he rings tomorrow...

I am a little confused with this handbrake business if you are talking about a Xantia surely the handbrake is on the front wheels on all models?

Hope the news from the garage is good.

Can't believe I said the handbrake was at the rear, shameful having owned a handful of Citroën's with the handbrake at front how could I make such a cork up, no call from Malcolm yet, I'm hoping that's a good sign and he's busy repairing the damaged pipe or it's still parked up waiting it's turn, will be giving him a call tomorrow afternoon. Thanks FOWMC.. :)

@Xantiagreen,

its ok its probably all this stress with the suspension pipe.

It can be surprising what the garage mechanics don't know

Example below.

I took my S2 Xantia to Selecta tyre and they lifted the car to the top suspension position to drive it onto the ramps from the road outside the tyre centre.
I took issue with this as the S2 manual says not to drive the car in the top position.

He told me that it was for traversing things like big rocks and ramps, I categorically told him it was only for use in a stationary position for changing wheels or measuring the level of lhm.

we parted company with very different opinions and some anger at each other. I returned with my Manual which does say do not drive the car in the top position, this is only for use changing wheels or measuring the level of LHM in the resoviour.

suffice to say that Selecta tyre do not fit my new tyres any more. I have found a tyre recycling yard that uses an old fashioned tyre balancer that balances the whole wheel on the car, the balance lasts the lifetime of the tyre unlike some places I know that require another re-balance half way through the life of the tyre and risk damaging the car.

good to hear you got a courtesy car to use has there been any news yet? Friday does seem to be the day they squeeze extra motors in for most of them. it is always a Thursday or Friday mine gets squeezed in these days. if its urgent maybe a little earlier.

Forgot to post the good news, xantia was repaired without any complications, almost a metre of corroded pipe was replaced and the rest cleaned up at a cost of £80, Malcolm also found my key's and beanie hat at no extra cost.. :)

I've probably got another year on the front tyres before I replace them, most of the wear is on the outside, middle and inside has almost 4mm or so
(budget tyres) hope to give the fronts something half decent when time comes, front tyres were spinning in 2nd gear (chucking it down) trying to get onto main road almost got the finger from HGV driver

good to see its sorted Xantiagreen,
most non citroenoeans would have simply scrapped the car, a very unjust thing to do.
