Am i doing the right thing?

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

I have owned a 1998 citroen Xantia 1.9TD 90 bhp for nearly 16 years, it has been a brilliant car until recently.
The bottom crankshaft pulley disintegrated and threw the cambelt about 18 months ago so a replacement head had to be sourced on this forum (thanks to Xac). the front driveshaft's have now been replaced March 2015 to stop the dreaded wobble at 40 to 50 mph and the rear disks and pads were done at the same time. the dash has also been out for a new matrix in the last 3 yrs.
and yesterday the alternator went home after almost 16 years service. mileage to date 177K

I have my eye on a 2002 Xantia Hdi 110. with very low mileage. for some reason I am slightly fearful of letting go of the earlier model Xantia, can anyone who has had a 110 Hdi give me some positives over the older Xantia please? maybe I need a push. I cant help thinking with all the money spent on the older car and the fact that it doesn't have a catalytic converter it may be a case of better the devil I know.
thanks in advance.
oh yes the New Xantia would also be an SX spec but it does seem to have a few more gadgets than my older SX.

Hi Nigel,

The 110HDi is an excellent car.. The 8v 110HDi engine is possibly one of the very best PSA engines (after the ES9J4) ever and are to all intents and purposes bomb-proof..

I doubt you'll ever hear a bad word against them...

My only gripe is they were never available in the S1 Xantia and to enjoy one you have to endure the horrors of an S2 Xantia...

So, go ahead without fear or worry. It'll be the best move you ever made...

The difference between the XUD9 and the HDi is a revelation...

Never looked back when I changed from a 1.9TD to a HDi 110. Make sure it is a 110 though (2 intercooler pipes under the bonnet). Those 20 BHP go a long way... better fuel economy, quieter, more powerful, better gearbox, lighter clutch. The only downside to the HDi is the electric fuel pump (OK, mine lasted 140k, so maybe not that bad!); the fuel pressure regulator starts to pack up after about 200k miles; and the clutch - they can decide to fail pretty well without warning, and changing one is a PITA - mine was still original at 160k though. Everything else is std Xantia; so if the one you are considering is well maintained and in good condition I would go for it.

Thanks Jim & Richard,

That has boosted my confidence a bit, much appreciated.

is it correct that the cambelt change intervals are longer in the Hdi?
at 87K its probably nearly time for one if this is the case.

it has loads of history and only 2 owners and is an estate, it still has its parcel shelf to.

actually its a 2000 registered SX I got a bit confused with the Reg.
apparently the rear door locks have just been repaired.

seller says he get 47 mpg is that good or bad would a remap help?

two keys and a working alarm system to. electric rear windows, more than I have in the old one.

it has an abs fault but its current owner is putting it in for an MOT in Sept. before private sale.

Here's a link to the engine bay hope it is a 110?

off to check photos for intercooler pipes

Richard when are you going to weld that dam de-cap?

regards Nigel...:)

Nigel, that is definitely a 110. The intercooler pipe to the left of the airbox is unique to the 110.

The potential purchase sounds excellent :-D

Thanks again Jim I'll take the plunge then.
Does this mean that they have a bigger turbo needing more air than the 90 ?

I can only confirm all the foregoing. I have a 110 Hdi in a 406 which has covered 240k+ and has never had a serious problem in the 50k + miles that I have owned it, still has the original clutch and DMF!

The leccy fuel pumps are only about £100 for genuine Siemens.

I know "The Horrors of an S2 Xantia" like the alternator nearly catching fire 2 weeks before it decides to quit completely.
and four weeks before I want to buy another car typical.

sounds like fun and there is room for more oomph now that the insurance plummeted by 100 quid when I turned 50 this year

sounds expensive. not entirely clear do you mean they are not fitted to a Xantia?

Yes. None of the Xantias have dual mass flywheels.

Just another view here...

I have a 110HDi after having a 1.9TD. I bought it 6 years ago with 147k on the clock and I've now got 272k on her. She still runs perfectly and returns 50mpg.
The 110 also has the bigger brakes as well, they are much better.
The cambelt change interval is 100k.

I've had to change in the 125k...
Clutch (190k) that started to slip at 188k and when we took the clutch off the plate wasn't too worn it was just the cover had gone weak. It'd probably have gone on for another 5k.
Fuel Pressure Reg at 260k

This is the best car I've ever owned and even now I don't want to consider replacing it. Easily will do 300k.

Get it, you'll love it
