One on the list....Wing Mirrors, rebuilding them..How ?

Post by Stickyfinger »

High guys, :)....how do you open up wing mirrors and dissemble to replace faulty motors etc ?

Remove glass ?
Strip apart, any tips ?
S1 different than S2, are they heated for example ?

Cheers

You get to the front of the motor by unclipping the spring clip behind the glass.

My hazy recollection is that to remove the motor assembly from the housing, you need to remove the back cover, which is the devils own pleasure.

Note that mk1 and mk2 motors have different wiring connections, but are otherwise interchangeable. If you have a passenger mirror with reverse dip (part of the comfort pack and rare on a mk1), then obviously that is different again.

Spec list shows heated for SX upwards on the S1. Mine aren't great though.

Great, lets hope the wires are there, they are for the heated washer jets

If the glass is tinted bluish then the mirrors are heated, none of mine work yet. I haven't checked the supply but apparently the elements in the glass wear out easily.
I'm prity sure the unheated ones don't have the 2 spade connectors on the back of the glass.
Heated washer jets? What's that all about? I want them.

Are they heated as standard or is this an upgrade? I'm already thinking fish tank heater in screen wash bottle.

Don't know, and as the car is not going to be used in the winter, the fitting will wait till later. You never know with British summers :)

Supplying it with mains might be a problem James...

Use the old trick of winding the washer jet supply pipe around a coolant hose to act as a cruse heat exchanger...

Years ago you could get a pukka heat exchanger to go in a heater hose to do just this properly. Very effective too!

Probably is a bit optimistic.
Coolant hose or a pair of these it shall be.

I've had neat screenwash freeze many times in the winter winds, don't know why I haven't already done something.

It'd only be on when the stalk was pulled. You're right though, I can pull the stalk for quite some time.
What does this heat exchanger look like? I can 3d print one with a sintered bronze filament.
