Golden LHM?

Post by tim leech »

Changed the lhm today on the Athena chaps, it's a golden browny colour with a green tint to it, it's hydractive but thought they all ran on the same lhm+ as other xantias?

Have held off refilling the reservoir until I've checked it, also how much does a xantia take, a bx is about 3 litres.

Thanks

It sounds like old fluid or a bit of incorrect fluid, best to get some hydraulic flushing fluid in first just in case as being that colour isnt ideal and you don't want to contaminate your nice new appletizer.

@Think@ my Xantiatook between 4-5 litres to fill ... been a while mind. 3 litres is a bit shy i think.

That's fine, I've got a 5 litre can.

I'll drain and clean the tank, stick some flush in and see how it does.

A few years ago I think that there was some LHM sold without the green dye. Yours is probably just old and oxidised.

Probably never been changed, the accu sphere looked like it had been at the bottom of a well!

opps, wrong thread, I thought the title related to events in the House of Lords :)

LHS turns a deep brown, not golden and no green....it may of been mixed.

Don't forget to let it flow from the brakes as well to clear it out of that part of the system

Or someone could have filled it with hydraflush and not changed it back after? (hydraflush is a typical clean oil 'golden' type colour IIRC)

Sounds just like the LHM in the Green Lady when I bought her in 2006. I have a full service history from the original supplying Citroen dealer, so there's no reason to suspect any alien fluid. I don't think the brakes had ever been bled before I changed the spheres; the fluid that came out of the brake lines started dirty brown turning to gold with an increasing green tinge. I kept on bleeding until nice new bright green LHM started to flow out of each calliper - rears first, fronts second.

The OP is asking about LHM in a Xantia, not LHS.

In my experience old LHM does seem to go an orangy/browny colour if it's left in for a long time, another possibility is that it had hydraflush in which I believe is orange as well.

There was in later posts wondering if it had been mixed....I pointed out that his was the wrong colour for LHS, thus he had LHM in the car not LHS..........................I think :)

Yesterday the Green Lady got some badly overdue TLC - new spheres and (front) brake hoses, empty reservoir and change LHM. The LHM that I bled from the brake lines afterwards was a gold colour. Give me an hour and I'll put up a small Wiki (under suspension) with photos.

All is well, new accu sphere and 5 litres of fresh LHM, no more constant ticking! :)

Wiki done with colour photos taken yesterday while doing a complete 6-sphere + LHM change; fitted new front brake hoses (MoT advisory for the last [cough] years!) at the same time to save bleeding the front brakes again.

I opened up 2 fresh bottles of morris lhm, vintage unknown, poured it into the BX tank & noticed it wasn't really green, it was golden, too late to do much about it, so poured it in. The next bottle was that vibrant green colour. Can sealed lhm actually go off over time? I plan to do a flush soonish anyway, so i'm not really concerned with the colour, it wont be in for too long.
