Removing passenger door, C5.

Post by boltonbloke »

Hi all. I need to replace the passenger door on my 2003 hdi C5, having bought a replacement from a breakers yard. Do I need to remove the wing and then access the two bolts, or can the hinge pins be removed at all? Any advice will be much appreciated....as soon as possible.

Hi, thanks for that, but what I really need to know is whether the hinge pins can be removed as they seem pretty stuck. Is it just a matter of hitting them with a hammer and punch? Thanks.

Well it "looks" like you remove the clip and tap them out (up) with a punch....others may of done it.

I am sure however you will need another person to hold/lift the door to release the "grip" of the door hanging on the pin

Is this not in reference to the front door? (since there is mention of possibly needing to remove the wing)

I recently replaced a front wing on my C5 and all I can say it's difficult. But looking at it tonight I'm quite sure you do NOT need to remove for door replacement.

The last time I removed a door was on a Mk 1 Cortina, so can't help much with the C5 hinge pin question. I do remember using a scissor jacks and wood block under the opened door, near the end to take the strain off the hinges while I worked on them.

As it's turned out, no difference to the way the rear door attaches, anyway :D

Hi, thanks for the replies. It's the front door on the passenger side. I think the most straightforward way would be to remove the hinge pins, but they seem extremely snug, and have no kind of bolt on the head, they are just smooth. Has anyone had to remove these before? Is it just a matter of hammering them out? Would it help to apply heat beforehand? Thanks.

As Sticky's diagram shows, they have a 'blind' head on the top, and a clip on the bottom. Remove the clip and tap the pin upwards while supporting the door. You will need help, particularly to refit - doors are heavier than they look, and have an annoying attraction to the wing edge if not carefully controlled!

Thanks for the help and advice everybody. I spoke to someone who works at a car body repair shop today and he gave me a top tip. There are two bolts that hold the hinge to the door that can be accessed by removing the strap that prevents the door from opening too far. Once these are out, the door is free of the hinge! Haven't tried it yet but will keep you posted. Cheers.
