C5 common parts

Post by lexi »

I think this C5 will need a new Intercooler. It is an LX 02 plate HDI. Oil is showing about 50mm above the bottom joint of cooler, where it is crimped. It seems to be spreading from there. I will check oil consumption and MPG on my first tank of fuel. This should give indication of loss of boost? I have nothing to compare to so I don't know how slow they should be. It pulls well enough and slogs up hills in 4th no problem.
My mate works in a big breakers and I will get him to look out bits. Up to what year does do later cars share the same parts as mine? (roughly) I am thinking of the intercooler first, then fuel tank pump, suspension pump etc.

If I can find a clean Intercooler with no staining and obvious oil leaks, I will take a chance and fit it. Will cost me little. I may not get a good one of course and have to buy new.

It should be pointed out that the intercooler contains no oil it's an air to air cooler, if there's oil around it's coming from somewhere else.

This is the way it is: http://s126.photobucket.com/user/alexbo ... 7.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hose clip is tight. Maybe I should strip it all off and wash down to start clean before tracing the oil leak. I have just changed oil and will monitor it on the dip stick to see how much is actually being used or lost. That and the mpg may tell the state of things. Any other suggestions or course of investigation welcome.

There may be a leak on rocker cover too. I wiped some oil from below it in the wells. Is there not something about a leaky rocker cover on these engines relating to it affecting the breathing? http://s126.photobucket.com/user/alexbo ... 6.jpg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

normally alot of oil around the intercooler is due to turbo seals leaking but these cars seem to leak a bit of oil into the breather pipes all the time

Thanks Darbuck. I think what you see is an accumulation of oil,over a long period of time. The car was not cared for with basic servicing I think.
From previous experience with Land Rovers, even a teaspoon of oil goes a long way if you drop it somewhere.

A little oil in the turbo piping is normal, from the turbo and the breather. A small leak in the induction system spreads it a long way! All Mk1 C5s diesels appear to use the same intercooler - including the 2.2, although that also has an air / water cooler.

Thanks Richard. If it give suitable mpg, it won't be an issue for me. If my mate sees a good IC, I will get him to grab it for me. He gets running cars coming in, so can assess them to a degree. The leccy tank pump? Is that the same through the facelift models and 16v?

The car is giving 47 mpg. This is a mix of motorway and country road with a tiny bit of town driving.Regular Shell diesel. Quite pleased with that as my I.9TD'S gave 42mpg on those same runs. That is me being very gentle. I think there will always be variations with older cars.

I will maybe get a check with Lexia. Can it check Turbo boost? I don't feel much happening on acceleration with The Donk! It does pull away ok and take hills.
I don't expect much with 110 bhp in a big car mind you. The little Jazz has 100 bp from a 1.4 with no turbo!

I don't really notice the turbo come in on mine either, although I know it is working - the boost is very smoothly controlled and it's a very small turbo, so you don't get the traditional turbo 'lag' and 'boost' feeling.

I am finding that is the case Wurly. Quite sure the turbo is ok. She pulls well up long fast drags in 4th.
