Xantia TD 1.9 Normal Running Temp

Post by ecohouse1 »

Was having paranoia at the weekend that my HG was going as I had noticed that the temp has been running hotter. My Xantia on open road sits around 75 on my guage but under load, pulling trailers etc - creeps up to 90. The fans kicked in at 90.
The ambient temperature here is warmer (as in all the UK) around 20 degrees and noticed the temp creeping up to 90-100. Still well below the red zone. Anyways when I got back I opened the header (not a good idea) and of course it all spewed out! Mind you the same thing happened with my Merc 190 the next day so its obviously a hot day and a hard working car. Seems to be OK now - sits between 75 - 90 most of the time.

What temp is reading on other Xantia 1.9TDs at the moment and does the general weather conditions affect engine temps that much?

Many thanks, Alan

Mines sitting at about 85. Not having the blowers on is making it a bit warmer as they're usually on the screen keeping it warm :p. It'll easily hit 90 on a cool day if i'm making progress though

Mine was creeping up to 90 today. I guess i need to flush her out. Think the thermostat is stuck open as well as mpg has been taking a dive recently so engine taking longer to get hot. Before this good weather she'd sit at 70, not good!

Mine only has one working fan at the moment and generally sits on the 75 mark during normal driving. If I'm giving it some she will creep upwards towards 90, but have never seen it get any higher than that, even when towing another car.

Worth noting that in hot weather like this the A/C will be rejecting a lot more heat if on, which heats the air going through the radiator even more, compounding the hotter weather issue.

The thermostat is usually opening at 85-88 degrees and the fan switch is usually around 95, the first posters car sounds like it needs a thermostat.

Failure of the head gasket doesn't in itself cause the engine to overheat, its the pressure in the cooling system blowing the water out that causes the overheating so if you are not loosing any coolant it should be OK. My Hdi runs at a steady 90C this time of the year but cooler in the winter.

My thermo is an 83c jobbie... no aircon and normally she runs showing 70... stuck open, or more likely half open?

Looks like around 90 give or take is the norm. I fitted a new stat in 2011 (48k miles ago) change coolant every 2 years or so and run forte stop leak all the time. I remember pulling a ridiculously large caravan up mountain passes a few years ago in July and the temp gauge would regularly top 110 but quickly dropped on downhills or flat bits!!

Northerner, I notice you have an i10. My partner was looking to replace her gutsy Tucson (22mpg from a diesel) with a small frug-mobile. She liked the look of the i10s so we looked a few and she liked them. I must admit to thinking I was going to hate it but it was a laugh to drive - really nippy and with a wheel in each corner you can fling it about. Her main like is the £30 road tax and 45+ mpg!We are picking up a 59 plate 25k miles 1.2 tonight!

You'll not go wrong then. This one is SWMBOs car and it replaced a rather spartan Citroen C1. This one is the second generation facelifted (came out 2014) Premium model so it comes with all addons, cruise etc but they are all well specced. I'm getting 52mpg driving it vigorously shall we say. Hers is the 1.0litre, they do a lesser mpg 1.2 (an older engine) as well. Enjoy it ... and a 5yr warranty!!
