Xantia 1996 1.9TD 293K starting problem

Post by romie »

Hi, just wondered if there's a common place to search for air leaks on these cars?

Normally fires first time.

She now if left over night or the 8 hours at work, she now unusually needs to be turned over many times 15-30 seconds before she eventually fires up.
Once running everything is fine.
Also after she runs, she starts fine if I turn her over again within a few hours.

I suspected an air leak in the fuel lines.

Confusingly tho, seeing as she was running fine when I stop the car, I'd have thought that the mechanical fuel pump would be acting as a reservoir and would be full of fuel for when she next starts, no? :/

I disconnected the feed banjo, pumped the priming bulb, fuel pumped out and only after a few spouts the inlet part of the pump was overflowing :/

hmmm?

I've ordered a load of transparent diesel filters and will put them inline in the feed and return lines as close to the pump as possible for diagnostics.

Cheers for any ideas/leads?

:)

Sounds like you're doing the right things. If you're running veg its worth looking at the fuel filter housing. They start to leak on the off side towards the bottom.

I have a stunningly similar problem (bosch pump) - every day , have to manually squeeze the primer then either crank for ever or use easy start

already change glow plus and fitted inline 1 way valve and nothing ; next up is replace all leak off (they look old) fuel filter and rubber fuel lines - pipes off ebay were about £7 for 1 meter of each.

have liberally sprayed G101 and degunking the engine so I try to spot any leaks , but theres not a lot left for me to change - next up is fuel filter housing , pump seals and injectors :(

mines a Bosch pump :)

I tried priming and NOT priming with the blub, it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I wonder if an issue with the return might be a thing? I'll have to take the return banjo off and see what comes out while running, but as the car runs fine after it starts, seems rather unlikely.

I suppose getting a small transparent container then running hoses directly from this to the pump will show that the pump is 'pumping' correctly :/

I don't understand tho.
The pump holds loads of fuel? Why can't it just fire on that from the beginning?
.... ohhhh, the pump, pumps all the fuel out, but gets little in return, yeah? :/

yes - from filter housing to fuel pump , will get the rest of the numbers shortly.

as forbubbles - as mentioned in the PM - tbh I don't know , im sure air must be getting in , somewhere before the fuel filter (maybe even the filter housing itself?)
