I have had mine remapped to around 160 to 165 bhp and on a trip to Holland avg mpg was 65.3 at about 70 mph.Now to and from work i'm doing 49 mpg and on runs 52 mpg. My mate has the same engine in an estate and gutted the dpf and blanked the egr valve and on a 50 mile trip avg 70mpg, then had it remapped and went to holland and avg 53 mpg.The question is
Has anyone just gutted the dpf and blanked the egr and got the same mpg or better ?

I'm getting an indicated late 40s on regular DERV, early 50s on more expensive stuff. My C5 II 2.0HDI is standard.

Blanking the EGR and gutting the DPF are not legal modifications for road use, so I would not be doing that. Here's the proof, which refer not to the laxer MoT standard but to the EURO III/IV/V/VI etc, some of the emissions for the C5II are on your V5.

"Regulation 61A of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations: it is illegal to use a vehicle on the road if it has been modified in such a way that it no longer meets the air quality emissions standards that it had to when originally produced."

70mph is bull, I do not believe that for one nanosecond....sorry if I offend.
As you are getting the mileage you say I would postulate that your car is working very well and would suggest you leave it alone and not try to achieve a (bullshit) story of 70mpg in a large estate car.

As above, I do not think egr blanking/gutting is good and I do not wish to poison the world either. I would ask you not to poison me as well which seems fair.

As told by my local station (small country place so very friendly), MOT stations are being advised to use a heat sensor "gun" to check the temps of the exhaust boxes under the car, that shows if the insides have been removed.

I couldn't get over 50 ever on my one. And I'm never in cities, and my son says I drive like a granda, which of course I am! I'm rarely over 55 mph, it's all quiet country roads. I couldn't get near 70 mpg with a 1.4 tdci fiesta, same running, so I must say I am a bit like Stickyfinger, I take the quoted figures with a huge dose of skepticism.

My C5 S1 2.0 HDi wasn't very good MPG wise but driving my Scenic 1.5 dCi on the motorway the onboard computer was showing 72mpg at around 60-65mph.

China kicks our more pollutants than every car in the world having their dpf removed, its a red herring. In a large city like london, yes it will have an effect on air quality to a certain degree, but then again look at how many buses & taxi's in london there are, kicking out stacks of pollutants & none of them are being forced to fit dpf's or egr's.....

It would be interesting to see if they heat gun proposal does go ahead (i doubt it will tbh), i'm assuming that they'll only be able to use it on vehicles from a specific age onwards, so i doubt it will affect anyone who's already removed or gutted the innards out of their cat, dpf or egr. The sooner manufacturers make better engines, they can then do away with these stupid devices which are costly to replace & affect fuel economy & engine power.

London buses have been progressively fitted with compliant engines over a long period of time now.

(The 'additional consultation' with private hire firms is a joke though - Addison Lee can sure as s**t afford to have compliant cars, so stop bloody winging and crying wolf...)


Also, just because China might at the moment be putting out loads of pollutants, that is not a valid reason to avoid making improvements elsewhere. Otherwise nothing ever changes or improves.
