I'll have a look tomorrow, I'll check under the fusebox too? You mean the one in the engine bay? Or the one under my knee? Cheers for the ongoing help.

Its definitely a relay with a bit of logic going on. I think it could be to do with the AC stuff now, because that never initiated the fans for some reason. Tomorrow PM I'm going to be going over the fuse boxes and checking continuity wherever I can. Sleepy now.

Well the relay I fixed is still in one piece and still attached. Problem is still intermittent, even after a battery swap. Where is this earth on the gearbox, I can't see it anywhere? Is it a big one?

Still the same, intermittent, but more off than on. I swapped the battery too, still the same. I wonder if there is a loose connection behind the dashboard and that the gearbox needs to read the speed from there, and because it dies it throws an error in the gearbox?
I've also noticed a three pin plug loose to the left of the fusebox (behind the plastic). I wonder what that is. Engine bay fusebox looked fine, nothing wrong there.

Is it worth giving the BSI a reset?

The fact that the dash dies points to something bizzare. There any french specialists nearby?

I'll certaibly give that a whirl.
I put the Lecxia on it early this morning. Got the following errors, maybe someone can shed some light on their meanings for me (or location of said components)?:
On the auto ecu:
* Remote/permanent: Injection throttle potentiometer (can)
remote/permanent: auto g/b communication with engine mamagement
* (intermittent) multifunction switch signal intermediate
* (can) engine torque information /coherence
Any clues there?

Well I followed that guide to the letter. And then I used Lexia to reinitialise the pedal (it seems smoother and less ballistic like, but not slower). It seems to be holding well so far... (watch this space)

well, I think we can close this one as solved. Three things were done, swapped for a known good battery, a proper bsi reset, and pedal reinitialisation on lexia. It's been fine for days now. Thanks to all that helped.

OK... Help... what the hell is it? it went again today, the gearbox went into limp mode, and then the rev/speedo/temp gauge failed, petrol gauge still works. Tried a BSI reset, didn't work. The immobiliser light does what it pleases too. And now it beeps if I leave the of ignition on without starting it. But it still starts. Everything else works fine. Other than an earth or loose a connection do you or anyone have any ideas? Cheers!

It's a long shot - but it will only take you 2 minutes. Remove and thoroughly clean the SHUNT fuse. Don't just pull it out and put it back in a few times, but give it a proper clean and also the slot it goes into. I've known a dodgy shunt fuse do funny things with a Xsara dashboard before now.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(
