2.0 Hdi runaway due to overfilling with oil

Post by orosurf »

Hi folks, today I stupidly overfilled my xantia 2.0 Hdi with oil and a couple of minutes after starting the engine started to runaway, I stopped it by stalling it. I started it again and it sounded ok but when I accelerated it went into runaway again. I got a tow home and actually had the engine ticking over for about half an hour so I could still steer. My question is , can I just drain the excess oil and perhaps it will be ok. or have I got to get the turbo rebuilt which is what the garage wants to do and the want 400 quid. I am in Russia and this is quite a big problem, the car had an oil leak before but otherwise ran well. Any help much appreciated.

Most would not admit it if they did.

Are you Russian or British in Russia ?

Just drain the oil out and get the correct level. It will either run fine with no issues in which case I would just carry on or it won't and you will have to have it fixed.

If its running fine on tickover then it may be ok. The job to do now is to find out where the excess oil is getting into the inlet pipes to make the engine run faster.

Outlet from the turbo on hdi 110s goes down at the back to the intercooler pipe under the engine.

Remove the link pipe from the turbo to intercooler and see what oil is in it.. this could give you an indication of turbo seals or not..

Hi, thanks for the replies. Yes I am British originally , my wife is Russian. It was running fine before (no smoke at all, but it had an oil leak) and ticking over normally after. I even drove it up a steep ramp into the garage, it only runs away when the turbo kicks in. I guess there is nothing to lose by trying to drain some oil first. Just panicked a bit at first, anyone who ever had this happen will know it is quite distressing :o

Yep, just drain it all out and refill to correct level. You have nothing to lose.
Slightly confused how overfilling with oil causes the engine to run away though 8-[

I agree, drain it, refil with the correct amount LESS 1/2 ltr (so its on Min level on the stick)....clean out/inspect intercooler for/of oil.

The run it, nothing to loose but check often for turbo bearing noise. Also, only run it on boost of a short time, then check for noise, as if there is a lot of oil in the bearings you don't want to let it get to hot at first.

Thank you guys, for all the advice, did all of the above and changed the oil filter , all working ok now, was a little bit smoky at first but drove it home no problem and turbo no worse than before. Found a new turbo online for about $250 so I will start saving for that now. I love this car, despite it's problems, it always seems to come through in the end. Thanks again :) =D>
