Need help to get back on forum
Computers been infected, cannot get IE to work it just loads the page and is white, few seconds ago the page wasn't showing google bar or the google page and all tools on left side were blank but bookmarks were visible but clicking on them wouldn't bring anything up, cannot find Mozilla or chrome either.
I have avg 2014 internet paid subscription running and same with malwarebytes, I ran mbytes and after 4-5 seconds the scan would cancel after a restart or two it runs but doesn't find any problems same with avg, but I still can't get online, IPV4 is connected but IPV6 isn't this is highlighted in lan connection settings but still showing disconnected. I don't have a backup of my PC, if I backup my PC with the potential virus can I then connect it to another pc but before opening anything run a full scan on the drive same with Mbyte. I ran netsh reset socket dos screen flashed up for a second but still no internet. I have had previous viruses that have been caught in their tracks by Mbytes and AVG but this one slipped through and the eery thing is it happened whilst I was watching Area 51 on vodlocker. I aint scared of no ghost

Re: Need help to get back on forum
Have you tried Linux?
Linux Mint and Ubuntu are both deadly simple to use and the risk of malware is so slight as to be completely negligible.
I did once get a file locker on mine. It just ignored it and carried on.
The only attempt in 15+ years and several machines on the go at once.
All Linux distributions are free downloads. They like a contribution but don't twist your arm or nag at you.

Could be difficult to download Linux if xg can't get a browser to open?

This is true but if interested I can send a bootable dongle with Linux on it - takes about 20 minutes to install but will run from the dongle to try it out (with some limitations)

So long since I've done one that I have probably forgotten most of the procedure. If memory serves, I found exporting and importing my Outlook Email to be the biggest pain.myglaren wrote:I agree.qprdude wrote:Sounds like a format and re-install jobbie to me.

That is a bit of a bind. Done it many times for others with broken machines but years since now.
I leave mine with the mail providers so I can access from any computer and avoid that problem.

Re: Need help to get back on forum
Malware, virus whatever it is, it doesn't want me to access the net or any programs on the pc to access the net. Its stopping me from detecting it and getting rid of it, I'm waiting for my portable hard drive to finish formatting then backup my PC it's asking for 127GB of space, (seems a lot) I don't have much on the PC other than possibly 53GB of photo's, videos and music and files, when I click on the properties for my drive it shows less than 70gb being used (must be the virus)qprdude wrote:So long since I've done one that I have probably forgotten most of the procedure. Just this minute been able to finally get onto the net through safe mode tried many times wouldn't let me, now it has I'm trying as quick as possible to download and run programs that are made for these buggin viruses, I hope I get it working..
Cheers for your input Rick, Steve.,.

Tried safe mode? Lot of viruses will evade and hide if they see an antivirus process running, safe mode only loads the essential drivers and services so most malware doesn't load up. From there run AVG and malwarebites

Re: Need help to get back on forum
This is one situation where if you're not a pretty confident user, I would suggest stopping right there and asking for outside help. Backing up could do more harm than good at this point as you will probably back up the virus. Do you have a regular backup regime?
I'd probably suggest seeking the help of a reputable computer repair shop at this point. They will have access to the specialised tools to at the very least recover most of your data and wipe the system clean, probably for a pretty sensible fee. Last time my father had to go down this route it cost him about fifty quid.
It's such a minefield trying to recover a system that's been crippled like this even when you do know the ins and outs of the OS like the back of your hand. Reinfection is also a massive risk if you don't specifically know where the original infection came from. Especially so if we don't know *what* it is, boot sector viruses seem to be something that you hear a lot more about these days, and if that's what we're dealing with nothing short of a full, low level format of the drive will get shot of it. I have only encountered one of these so far, which was luckily on a SCSI drive that I could easily low level format from the BIOS setup screen for the adaptor card.
Afraid I can't really offer much other advice...haven't used Windows since 2007, and last time I crossed paths with it (Windows 8) I had to resort to Google to work out how to shut down the computer! I used to be quite a power user, making both my Amiga 1200 and Windows 3.11 install (on a 486 DX4/100) do all manner of weird, wonderful things, including many that they shouldn't have been able to according to the system requirements boxes. These days though, not so much. Linux I do better with because the underlying structure hasn't changed so massively I guess.

Re: Need help to get back on forum
Before a format, I would back up "My Documents " and "My Pictures " to an external hard drive if you have anything of sentimental value. Certainly not anywhere on your PC. Afraid you should dump most other stuff . You should have your "Windows" platform info under Microsoft a sticker beneath your Laptop (If it is a laptop) so you can reload at any time. Would definitely dump the video and music downloads as many of them are well known for sneaking TH virus onto your machine.

Re: Need help to get back on forum
I would also add that, once you have got Windows up and running again (assuming you are going to use Windows), and it is Windows 7 or better, you can get Microsofts' own AV package for free. It seems to work, and my cousin (who is a professional programmer) uses it and finds it does not get in the way. You must access the downloader program from the PC in question, as it will look at it and send you the correct one for the version and bitwidth of the O/S it sees.

Re: Need help to get back on forum
Cheers for the info I managed to get the PC up running, luckily the registry keys were still intact for me to copy and use, most of the stuff I copied over to a portable mainly videos/photos of family, documents I have on a stick. I downloaded a good set of utils like Combofix, adwcleaner, roguekiller, rkill and hitmanpro still have malwarebytes and avg 2015 is.chinkostu wrote:Tried safe mode? Cheers Zelandeth, I've never trusted to take any of my machines to pc repair shops unless it was under guarantee, I've used advice from forums and the net and I've always fixed the problem. Pc is up and running just need to copy all vids/photos over.Zelandeth wrote:This is one situation where if you're not a pretty confident user, I would suggest stopping right there and asking for outside help.
