C5 Fan motor

Post by andybsmith »

Hi my fan motor has stopped working, checked fue under bonnet 40 amp seems ok, checked fuse no 24 or 25 under dash 15 amp seems ok, any ideas or is it a matter of stripping out the motor and checking that. Initialy when turning the ignition on the dash panel shows that the motor is set to full, but then nothing happens and the blades symbol goes to zero. The demister function doesn't work either. I hope some one can help me with this, the car by the way is a 2003 C5 2.2 HDI Exclusive.

Probably the ecu for the climate control. It's in the heater box and can be found in the drivers footwell beside the clutch pedal. Simple to change and easily available off eBay. That's exactly what happened to my first 2003 c5.

Be careful buying on eBay. Some sellers are charging around £120. I bought one last year for about £20 with a lifetime warranty.

I don't seem to have a record of the transaction but here is a similar one.

Update, it's a coolish evening and I set the climate control to 16 and started the car, the fan motor briefly started to work and then cut out (1 or 2 secs max) looking at previous replies to my post does the fan motor resistor act as an ecu for the climate control? I've looked by the LHS of the drivers footwell and found what appears to be roughly the same item in myglaren's link ie component with 4 thick wires and 2 very thin wires secured by two screws/bolts to the footwell. My confusion is that it isn't in the heater box like daviemck2006 said, also if this is the offending part does this indicate a deeper problem, or can these resistors just blow through old age. I must admit I am quite relieved that the motor does indeed start to spin because that indicates that it isn't jammed. I'll explore further in the morning when I an get the car on the drive and not have to dodge passing traffic.

I may be wrong about the heater box. It was a long time ago! The part that myglaren linked is what you want. Thinking about it it will be in a heater duct (maybe lol). It is a common fault and changing the unit should sort it out. Sorry if I confused you by saying the heater box!

It is definitely in the heater duct. The heatsink fins get very hot (burned myself on mine when it fell out while driving) and needs the cooling airflow.

You have to be a bit of a contortionist to do it [emoji1]
Glad it's working now.
