Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
Just use the best fitting of the plates from the puller kit on the inside (Don't fit the circlip first, cos then you have to take it out again - guess how I know that ) - you only need a smaller one on the outside to pull the hub back in.romie wrote:cool, so supporting the other side of the inner race. I can use the old inner race for this?
Thanks Jim
Using the threaded puller it's pretty easy to get it square and pull in OK - well I managed it twice anyway! When you do it 'for real' make sure you take care over the ABS sensor - easy to damage I imagine.

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
ah, right'o.
Does the hub only pull through flush to the outside of the inner race then. And so I can use a flat plate to support the inner race?
(I don't have it with me to check)
No abs on mine (which I love)

Yes and yes, as the inner hub stub ends up just shy of the end of the further inner race whilst its flange face rests on the outside of the nearest inner race....romie wrote: Does the hub only pull through flush to the outside of the inner race then. Richard, good point about the circlip

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
Took me bloody ages to get it in (must get some proper circlip pliers next time), finally got it. Then offered up the puller, and realised my mistake So had to fight it out again! Had dismissed circlip pliers, as no way it is coming out the way its maker intended, but sort of forgot about putting it back inCitroJim wrote:Richard, good point about the circlip

DONE!
Not such a bigger job, (ehem ~ only after some great pointers on here! :p and being able to practice on spare hub carrier)
Cheers guys!
Totally recommend going straight for the hub/bearing change in future.
Minimum key tools are:
Bearing removal kit
10lb Sledge hammer (or better an appropriate press )

Excellent work Romie Those pictures give a good guide for anyone doing the job without a press and shows it can be done, albeit with the aid of a big hammer!!!

Would have taken a lot longer without the very useful advise on here mind!

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
erm, yeah sure. I'll have to have a read of other people contributions to get the layout. But I'll get it in there.
If I knew, I'd have got better step by step pictures!

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
Cheers!
I leave the carrier in place when doing the lower suspension ball joint.
Special castle socket for joint (ebay). (also needed a deep impact 35mm socket to go on the back of the castle socket.
I put the bolt back on and tightened up (hence a deep 35mm socket), after fitting the castle socket to lock the whole assembly in place so the little castle fingers and related holes don't get wrecked while under full load but possibly at an angle.)
Loooong breaker bar. I use a 1" drive 1Meter jobbie.
Big metal welded link chain, one end attached to hub using wheel nuts other end attached to chassis to stop hub carrier rotating whilst turning the joint
