Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
Yep, that's it more or less. You can bet your bottom dollar that the circlip will resist a lot more than that! Xantia bearing has to be pulled back in from behind as there is a lip at the front. It's easy to break the inner race once you have cut a slot in it - it's very hard, so cracks easily.

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
So as a pre-run, I've stripped the non-fitting hub carrier and found it seems not to have a normal bearing in there?
It seems that the internal part of the hub carrier has been ground to take the bearings directly in the form? :/
Bit worrying as I need to fit this in mine
See how it looks like it won't fit in there?

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
In the above pic. I've removed the ball bearings and shoved what's left of the bearing housing back on the old hub.
There doesn't seem to be an outer race?? Just the machined surface in the inner hub carrier? :/
Am confused. Is this normal?

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
That to me looks like the race is stuck, almost an older bearing style i think. Does it move if you try and tap it out? As the bearings are push fit anyway so that shouldnt be there

Here's a vid.
It seems that the bit in the hub carrier is part of the hub carrier? :/

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
I've tried pressing them out with the bearing remover tool kit as shown earlier in a very agressive way, the two outer faces came out, but the inner race seems to be part of the hub carrier.
Could be wrong, but I see no seam at all? :/

I guarantee if you get a chisel you could tap it out. Bearing is a standard type on servicebox
It will be chuffin tight though

Right'o. Cheers for the confident - "it will move"! :p
I'll get at it with a cold chisel tonight. I just can't see where to attack from? :/
here's some better images I got from my work camera.

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
or even which side to attack from?
I've removed the circlip. I take it you have to somehow knock it through from the opposite side to the circlip, and out of the circlip side, yup? :/
So hit it from this side somehow. Maybe the chisel to the inside bearing surface might give a good purchase :I

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
Yes, it comes out towards the inside edge. Think you will find it difficult to get that out TBH.... You will need to drive on the centre raised bit, but evenly all the way round as if it goes off square then it will jam solid (if it isn't already!). If you've got one of the threaded pullers you might be able to get one of the rings inside to sit on the raised bit and pull it that way. Otherwise if you have got access to a welder then run a ring of weld round the inside both above and below the raised bit, and then when it cools it should shrink the outer ring back a bit so it should come out (more) easily. In fact I would think this will be the only way you will get it, so if you haven't got a welder, then prob worth finding someone who does.

Re: 1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement
ah, fantastic. Yes I've got that threaded puller, and a welder.
Puller against inner ring - check.
Extract from inside edge - check.
If no movement then two rings of weld - check.
Great, I'll try that.
Is really good I have this hub carrier to practice on! I'd have been without a car for a few days otherwise :/
Thanks for the heads-up guys, appreciated
Once this is sorted I'll have the routine for the actual job - ace

it was quite confusing when I first saw it. Looked so much like it was 'part' of the carrier. Well there you go. Experience an all that :p
