1996 Xantia 1.9TD 290k front nearside hub replacement

Post by romie »

heya!

I've got a bent hub :( boo!

Before attacking, I just wondered what I'd need to replace it?

I've got a 1" meter long breaker for the hub nut (any idea of the size of that nut?).

But do I need pullers at all?
Maybe for getting the hub off the carrier or the bearing out?

And can I re-use the bearing as it's fine?

Cheers for any heads-up guys! :D

Ideally you need the hub carrier off and in a press or vice. Pullers won't work as the only thing it can press against is the driveshaft which compresses!

As above plus the hubnut is 35mm. You need to remove the pin and cover over it first.

You need a big press to get the bearings in or out. You will never be able to get the bearings out without destroying them.
My advice would be to find a good used hub/carrier assembly and swap the whole thing. Or take the job to a workshop that has the tools and experience.

are you sure the hub/carrier is bent, its very unusual for such a big chunk of cast iron to bend
as above though if it really does need replacing swap the hole lump for a good used one

cheers, yeah, I bashed it into a curb a year or so ago after sliding on ice :/
Bent the wishbone back 10-20mm. Replaced wishbone at the time.

Changed pads and discs recently and it now seems more pronounced.
Only feel it when braking, but figure I should sort it out.
Thought it might be the disc but of course I wanted to check the hub before running off to exchange.. and here's the vid.

it seems the tip of your dial gauge is running on a rough/rusty surface in your vid

yup :/ I sanded off the surface but it was still a bit rough. It showed me that the general wobble came from the hub tho.

From what you guys have said, I've found a hub, carrier (with disc) for £15 delivered :)

For £15, at least if I still want to change the hub for some reason, I'll be able to do it on this spare set up and so still be able to use he car! Hahah

:p Cheers guys

nuts.
So replacement hub carrier assembly was slightly different to my one. Only found out at the point where I was just fitting the brake calliper back on :(

Looked identical, but these two distances were different, see picture :/

(hub at bottom of image is mine. Higher one had a bigger distance between calliper mounting face and hub face)

(also my 35mm impact socket fitted in my hub, but not in the new one! Slightly smaller outer diameter ring where the socket needs to go into >:( )

So, new plan.
Reckon I'll go for replacing hub with new one.

So would it be possible, given some sort of 'hub puller' (slide hammer or other type) and a bearing install tool, to replace hub without upsetting the bearing?

Was looking at this bearing install tool set.
There seems to be a few different arrangement of bits in some of these.
These look ok to re-install the new hub? :)

or this one looks like it might have one extra bit in it.

I fear you my not be successful with those tools, those bearings are best done in a large press and I wonder if you/they well be strong enough.

bugger.

Odd, that hub carrier has different measurements eh?
Of course it was detailed as for the same vehicle and age of mine :/

Spose I could just try getting the hub out of the non-fitting one as a practice job.
Before buying tools, I'll try 'tapping' the hub from the bearing using something like a socket and a sledgehammer, just to see what happens.

Orrr, I could make a press from some box section and a bottle jack - hmmm

Something odd going on there...

On the 'new' hub the centre part looks smaller diameter? In which case it will be no good for you, as the wheel won't fit properly. Also, if you put that hub in your hub carrier, then it will probably still be in the same (wrong!) place. If you look at the back of the bearing, is the hub flush with the back of the bearing?

You can't change the hub without changing the bearing - when you pull the hub out of the bearing it will pull the inner part of the outer race of the bearing with it (and which you will then need to cut / press off the hub), rendering the bearing scrap.

I've got one of those tool sets, and used it to change both front wheel bearings on my 307. It works surprisingly well, but you need a big vice to hold the hub, and a bag bar to turn the nut on the screw (see that breaker bar you used to get the hub nut undone  ). What I did with mine was to put tension on the bearing, then support the hub and give the end of the tool a good few whacks - this was enough to just unseat the bearing, and allow me then to pull it out. First of course you need to remove the circlip on the back - and that may be a whole world of pain!

Easiest way to get the hub out of the bearing is to get a couple of bolts the same pitch as the wheel bolts, and then screw them through the wheel bolt holes, and using appropriate packers, use them to jack the hub out of the bearing / carrier (some of the tool sets contain screws that are for this, but be aware that PSA sometimes use different thread pitch, so the std ones may not be any good (I got to having all the bolts undone and ready to take the hub carrier off the car before I realised that.... )

smaller diameter? Maybe, but I did manage to get he new hub on right up to the point where the brake callipers wouldn't then fit >:( gah!

Can't remove hub without pulling the bearing apart?
ah, damn. This is what I was worried about.
I've seen a few youtube vids of a hub bearing falling to bits after the hub is pulled out but was hoping that was on hubs that had open races? Bud damn.
And now you've said that, I've also seen the vids where that inner bearing race needed to be angle ground and then whacked out with a cold or air chisel. ugh.

Good plan with the bolts pushing the hub off 'through the wheel bolt holes', I was thinking about this myself! >:D
I need to figure out what thread they are :/

ok, now I know that getting the hub and bearing off is the same as some of the youtube vids I've been seeing.
Something like this procedure?
(do you love the text to voice they've done on this? ;p )
