Can you not just take it out of gear and haul it on as you are scrapping it ? even use the starter to assist the pushers

Does the immobiliser kill the spark or just the fueling?
Both.

Is it a car that is otherwise worth saving?

Bugger.

The only real reason to starting would be to aid loading. The only trailer we have ha quite a high bed & shortish ramps so the threshold where the ramps meet the trailer deck is quite pronounced. We've had 'normal' height cars bottom out - so heaven knows what the Xantia will be like - looks like we are going to have to get 'creative' with it.

Can the code be read from the ECU with a diagnostic tool such Snap-On Solus unit or simiar or is it a dealer only job?

No the code cannot be read with any normal diagnostic tool.

I have seen reference to dead Xantia being raised by taking off the aux belt and spinning the pump with an electric drill (connected to the pump pulley with a suitable belt and pulley)

Sounds like take the plugs out, crank the engine over with the starter to get the suspension pumped up and then winch/pull/push job then.

This may give you a clue what the code is (phone number, birthdays etc), or reduce the number of combinations you need to try to 4^4 (256)
And with a 30 minute lockout for every 3 wrong attempts, it would only take you 43 hours of continuous attempts to try all combinations. :rofl2:
