Couple of parts prices needed please........

Post by hamster99 »

Hi All
Hope you're enjoying the long weekend!
Just discovered while investigating a clunking noise from the rear of my C5 that the bump stops on both sides are missing. Judging by the mud and dirt they've been gone some time...!!!
Looking on service citroen the part number I think is 5166 76
Also, price for C4 alloy part number 5402 CT
Thanks

I'll give you an approximate:

5166 76 = 7.5 GBP
5402 CT (75 J17 CH4-32 [C4 B7]) = 135 GBP

Does the "clunking" sound like a "metallic CLACK" and happen over speed bumps etc ?, if so have your rear arm bearings checked (do the tires lean in a little when looked from behind on high ?)

Thanks Vborovic, Stickyfinger

Yes, the clunking generally only happens over speed bumps. When I had the car up on stands yesterday I checked for any movement on the trailing arms and they seemed very solid, although they aren't that easy to jiggle about by hand!

The tyres don't seem to lean in and the tyre wear is very even across the tyre width, they were brand new Michelins last year, so I wouldn't have thought there was a problem with suspension geometry.

If it does turn out to be a bearing issue, are they easy to change?

Over speed bumps, then I would say the odds are very much on it being the bearings, normally the passenger side. You often cannot tell when jacked, its under tension.

Define easy....:( I have scraped one and had one repaired. Others will talk you thru it if you are OK/Experienced at spannering as well as having some equipment/garage

ps.
you wont feel play in the rear arms unless you unbolt the anti roll bar and depressurise the hydraulic system,

the anti roll bar is one piece of high tensile steel bar which is bolted straight across and directly to both rear arms

Hmmmm, does that mean you can only tell if the bearings are gone by stripping the trailing arms? But if you strip them and the bearings are fine, it's a bit of a wasted effort.

Catch 22 it seems......!!!!

The way to test them is to drive over speed bumps, if they "Clack" or "Clunk" then they are gone.....sorry not a "catch22" at all I am afraid.....99.9% probable and God does not bet .01%

I believe a few guys have had it done recently, they can help with prices and who is good to go to..(worth a good drive for their recent experience). It is not a Road-Side job with a set of Halfords spanners.

sometimes you can see if they are gone, with the car fully up on its highest setting, stand a little way back behind the car looking at both rear wheels,
if one or both look like / \ they are gone,

my suggestion earlier is if you can visually/audibly tell,

you just really need both wheels off the ground and the car SUPPORTED SAFETLY,
depressurise the system and unbolt the 4 anti roll bar mounting bolts ( two in the underside of each arm )

this will usually allow the arm to be moved about to feel any play ( still not 100% conclusive though   :-D  )

Thanks Stickyfinger / Malcolm
That seems fairly straightforward, wish I'd known that when it was up on stands a few days ago... #-o #-o
Am not averse to tackling difficult jobs on C5.....turbo, lower ball joints, dash out, etc.....keeps me young :rofl2:

Hi Hamster

Check out this link

http://www.mars.dti.ne.jp/~ynar/bxorg_a ... /m07e.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Although not exactly for the C5 it gives a good overview of the problem and the bits needed to fix it. I used it as a guide for when I did mine and it was very useful. I didnt buy the kit but googled each part and found the majority were cheaper on ebay than main dealers. Main issue is the pin holding the suspension sphere into the trailing arm (looks like I big safety pin. I spent the week before the job getting under the car and spraying all relevant fasteners and that pin with plus gas to make sure they would come off and were not rusted in place.

the list i posted some timwe back on here i belive the total price came to around £36'ish quid for all the parts, sourcing some bits from GSF and the rest from the dealer,

some of the parts are different for the C5 than the likes of the BX, CX, C15 and XANT,
