GUNK it on all (non electric) parts and hose wash or wipe off with lots of rags, petrol for tank filters.

Gunk is disgusting s**t, and not even that effective any more.Stickyfinger wrote:GUNK it on all (non electric) parts and hose wash or wipe off with lots of rags, petrol for tank filters.
LHM will wash off with a good strong fairy liquid solution - we used to use that to clean it off the floors of the workshop when I worked at a main dealer back in the late 80s! That, and a decent scrub will have it off easily.
Brake cleaner is also a good thing to use.

No salt will go anywhere near my car, especially not near alloy.....fairy liquid solution
I have no great complaints about Gunk, I am happy it is relatively mild....stinks in the summer

Do you stay in your house in winter and never use the car? The amount of salt in Fairy is *miniscule* compared to what a vehicle is exposed to in winter... and if you rinse it off after you've washed it.Stickyfinger wrote:No salt will go anywhere near my car, especially not near alloy.....fairy liquid solution
Anyway... I think Ammonia is also corrosive to alloy..

Re: Best thing for cleaning LHM?
I would agree about the road salt (but the Activa will never see salt) but I still would not use it in the engine bay etc as that does not get hit by to much and it will collect in nasty places as well as penetrate into looms etc and sit there rotting stuff.
Ammonia evaporates and oxidises in the presence of carbon and oxygen so not a problem in an engine bay.

We don't get road salting! Boo. I suppose it's my own fault if I slide off the road down the mountain!!!
I didn't know fairy has salt in it. My BIL was a builder, they used fairy in mortar to stop it drying so quick, but the building inspector would go bonkers if they were caught. Spoke to a heating fitter the other day, he said not allowed to use fairy to find leaks anymore, apparently it's corrosive?!
Haven't seen gunk over here but we do have brake cleaner.
In the end I've used a bit of petrol, then scrubby cloth and car soap. I guess LHM dries pretty quickly as I never see it on the drive.
