2002 2.0HDI Water Temp Sensor

Post by johnway »

Hi everyone,
Need to locate this sensor for replacement but can't see it - help please. Haynes does say that I may have to remove a few bits to get to it but it would be a great help and possibly save a great deal of work if I knew where it was in the first place !!
Many thanks,
John. :?

I think I have resolved the location of the sensor from photos on ebay of thermostat housings - just have to examine mine to see if it is plastic or alloy. Any tips/advice though to complete the replacement would be very welcome.
All the best,
John.

From memory it was on the right hand side of the engine block on my 2.2HDi. It was a lime green coloured plastic job held in with a strange circlip. It was just a case of squeezing my hand between some pipes, pinging the circlip off and pushing the new sensor into place with the new circlip, coolant loss was minimal. What issues are you having? My temp gauge was staying on zero, occasionaly flying up to the correct temperature and then zeroing again.

Located the sensor on engine nearside behind the air filter housing. Temperature gauge erratic - up and down to zero. I believe this is a common problem with these sensors.
Many thanks, John.

If it's got the plastic housing be careful removing the sensor, and don't be surprised if it breaks.... If you post up the last 8 digits of the VIN I can see if servicebox tells us what housing is fitted, although it was not playing ball earlier on....

Hi Richard,
VIN = 81558154 . I shall be careful but is it the housing or sensor which may break?
Many thanks,
John.

It's the housing that breaks.... and yours is the plastic one :x New housing comes complete with probe, stat, and stat outlet, and costs £135... Sensor on it's own from Pug is nearly £30.

Reference Description Quantity Price - VAT Price + VAT Total + VAT Selection
00001336S4 OUTLET TANK 112.43 GBP 134.92 GBP 134.92 GBP

00001338C1 SENSOR 24.01 GBP 28.81 GBP 28.81 GBP

Lots of sensors on e-bay for a lot less than that, but only 2nd hand tanks.

Many thanks Richard - found one on the bay for £1.98 from Hong Kong - have to wait a while for delivery but there is no rush!! Crazy price but exactly the same as UK sellers - if it only lasts a year then good value for money as even the OE ones fail regularly I am told.
All the best,
John.
