xantia wiring problems

Post by Raul »

Hi

I hope someone can help me with wiring problem. I was cruising around when suddenly some smoke came from the dash area. I stopped the car and turned off the ignition. I removed one cover that is on the top of the pedals and found out that one wire that has a small fusebox with fuse has melted( the fuse was melted with the fusebox, the wire was mostly ok). I purposedly broked it to stop the short circuit ( or bad connection) and then I could drive home without setting the car on fire. So I looked closer at home and this wire leads to a relay or something that has "xantia" written on. There are many wires that a leading to this relay. My guess is that this has something related with lights and signalization or smth. Also it seems that some of the connections are not made from the factory. What is the purpose of this "relay" ? Can I just let it unconnected?

If you could post a picture of the relay it could help identify it.
Apart from that, have you become aware of anything not working since that happened? Would be a good way to see what the relay was for.
You remark that some wires appear not to be connected. This is most likely due to which model Xantia you have as usually all the basic equipment and wiring is there and different models just need to be plugged in in the right places.

If you could put the year and model of your Xantia in your signature it will then always be there for anyone attempting to offer advice to see and help formulate their replies.

Raul,

My old xantia was a TD 1.9 1998 and I have never seen anything like it under the fuse box steering column. Likewise my current xantia 2.0 Hdi 90 hp 1999 model.

Do you know where this wire comes from and goes to ?

It had something to do with headlights. When I turned the ignition on the headlights started to glow. Now they are gone. I left this relay unconnected because it seems to me that someone has fitted it there later so it is not originally installed from the factory. The label "xantia" on the relay misguided me . Everything works fine now and I am not taking the risk to connect this relay again.

I believe that there is a headlight mod, that uses a relay, to stop contacts in the ignition switch from getting burnt out. IIRC this was on S1 Xantia, but was not required on S2 models, as Citroen implemented it themselves. Other than that I cannot say, as I have no personal experience of this issue.
