XM headlight problem

Post by Xantia97 »

Hi All,
We have a problem with the XM (1997 2.5TD VSX Estate), today both dipped and one main-beam light have stopped working at the same time, side lights ok and the one working light will 'flash'. Fuses checked, but bulbs not checked - doubt three would go at exactly the same time. OH said he heard the control stalk 'chattering' last week, like a relay switching on and off. Any ideas where we should look first please? :?
Thanks,
Juliet

I guess that the main beam problem is a bulb, and the dip beam problem is connections on the relay (above the RH headlamp).

For a wiring diagram that should match your car, see Gabors excellent production (not sure if you need to be a member of http://www.club-xm.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for the link to work).

I've experienced the 'chattering' stalk on previously owned XMs.
It was the indicator stalk sitting a bit too low, I.e. drooping, such that the internal contacts were close enough to cause electrical arching, which causes the indicator light relay to click on/off rapidly.
I think it's caused by aging/weakening of the internal spring that should return the indicator stalk to its middle position.
If it happens again try lifting the stalk upwards a tiny bit and see if the chattering stops.

Ultimately a new indicator stalk will fix this. If you can get one!

I don't know if this has anything to do with your headlights not working, other than they are controlled by the same stalk.

Thanks Hattershaun, the dipped lights work this morning - the joys of French electrics - so we think it is looking like a problem with the stalk, luckily they are still available, at least they are in France for about 105 euros so not too bad.

The problem was indeed the stalk, new one fitted by Citroen garage and all fine.
