Just bought my first XM and the dipped and caabin inside lights dont work. I think I have isolated this to the "lighting switch" that is supposed to be attached to the lower steering wheel shroud but there's nothing there. The main beam works, as do the rear fog lights aand brake lights.The rear luggage compartment lights also work.
Its a K reg XM estate, first registered in Dec 1992.
I would appreciate any assistance in solving this one. Also, I bought the Haymes manual today and it helpfully informed me that the V6 isnt covered in their publication. After reading the feedback on Norries CD manual, would this cover everything I need to know.
Any help gratefully appreciated

Apart from the extras your hi end XM model is fitted with - the basic electric schematics still applies to a V6 model.
You'll have to learn how to interprete a Citroen schematic first - as with any other make manufacturers tends to do their own standard symbolics in such schematics.

At the bottom of the page you can click "elektro schemata" and find all the electric schematics - including a few for the V6.
Don't mind the Czeck language - you'll soon recon what they mean.
As for your real problem - use your logic and brains. Any car will have a light switch containing controls for main & dipped beams. It's supposed to be an easy reach control during drive - no akward hidden control buttons.
Chances are you have a problem in the light switch - or the fuses.
More important/severe - you could have a problem in the generator/charge circuit which makes for an intermittent electrical connection between battery & generator. This can cause momentary overvoltage surges in your car electrics - known to blow out the dipped beam bulb filaments instantly.

90% of all lighting problems on XM's originate with the three relays above the drivers side headlamp. The wiring between these three and the rest of the car lighting is really grotesque! (try understanding the wiring diagram if you can get hold of one). These relays suffer corrosion of the contact blades (due to the daft position - ideal for collecting road dirt and salt) which causes overheating, melting plastic and finally sticking contacts.
