Xantia HDi - high pressure pump query

Post by CitroenCrazy »

I posted a while back about my good friend John's HDi 90 Xantia. It still won't start. As I mentioned last time, the engine will run, briefly, on a squirt of easy start.

Earlier advice pointed to to the regulator, so that's been swapped for a second-hand replacement, to no avail.

To try to help out, I made a pressure gauge that connects to the fuel rail. (Pictures of it being tested on my car - https://www.flickr.com/photos/citroencr ... 906987760/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

This shows no pressure when cranking. The low pressure pump is delivering fuel properly, so in my mind, it must be the high pressure pump.

Does this sound right ?

Thanks

Yes it does sound correct.

From memory you need minimum of around 200 bar on the fuel rail for it to start.

Is the cam belt intact and pump pully turning??

An engine can still sound like its cranking ok even with a broken belt! I was fooled once with a 405 td xud..

Take the fuel rail pipe off the back of the pump (the steal one thats got 13mm unions each ends) and spin the engine over.. it should still throw a high flow quantity of fuel out...

If not.. id suspect belt if you are certain the tank pump works..you can also check the tank pump.. in the ecu box next to the expansion tank theres a brown double relay. Remove the relay and with a small jump wire connect pins 1 and 15 (im sure, they are numbered too) and this should activate the tank pump..
