C5 driveshaft change

Post by wurlycorner »

Need to change the nearside (passenger) driveshaft this weekend (if GSF can get their act together and get one in for me  )
I haven't got a Haynes for the car yet, so just checking what needs to be undone to get enough clearance to slide the shaft out of the hub.
Is it the usual (Steering knuckle ball joint and lower hub ball joint?)?
Are there any particular difficulties with getting these undone? (e.g. lower ball joint on a Xantia is a complete bitch to get a splitter tool on, I remember)

Thanks

How much are the driveshafts at GSF?

I bought one for the Berlingo from this lot - in stock, delivered next day delivery. Fitted by our own Citronut..

Should be do-able with just the bottom ball joint off. Undo the hub nut with the wheel on the ground (35mm socket needed!). Jack up and support, suspension on low. Split bottom ball joint (no idea how tricky this is on the C5!). Drain the gear box oil, lift the hub out of the lower arm, disengage the shaft from the hub, and pull it out of the gear box - get hold of it behind the inner inner boot so the joint doesn't fall apart. Replace the driveshaft oil seal, otherwise it will leak! Refit the shaft. Refill the box with 75W80 oil (1.8 litres or thereabouts). Job done.

Thanks all.

The driveshaft was going to work out at £26 something after a stupid big discount offer they had on today, but the order didn't go through properly cause of something odd with stock levels and I had to email them about it, so we'll see...

This will be the first use in anger of what I've been installing over the last several months - makes it slightly easier than rolling around the drive in the rain ;-)

for this job all you need a long bar for would be undoing the hub nut,

i use a 1/2 inch drive 2 foot knuckle bar with a 4 foot scaffold tube slid all the way over it, and just use continuous pressure ( do not bounce on it ) as this is what shears these knuckle bar,

also add to Richards option i would disconnect the track rod end as well, as this allows the strut to move round out of the way more freely,

be very careful on rotating the strut that you do not over strain the drop link ball joints, as they can pop out

Thanks guys
:luv:

There's quite a bit more aggro that goes with tnstalling the four poster than with those drive on tipping ramps you've picked up though stickyfinger - if I'd gone with those, it would have saved me months of hassle and a not insignificant amount of C40 concrete and personal labour, so don't be too overawed. You'll be in action with them far quicker than I was with this! :-D
