I'm looking for comfort and quiet basically. I don't need to get from 0 - 62 in the blink of an eye, nor do I need to achieve speeds close to the sound barrier. OK, the occasional "slightly ambitious" motorway speed, but nothing outrageous. I never tailgate, and I drive according to my ability and the prevailing road conditions
I've been researching for three days now and I'm more confused than when I started.
It seems that many of the budget tyres have a higher Decibel reading than the mid range tyres I have been considering. My current cheapos (on the car when I bought it 3 years and 19,000 miles ago) are somewhere between the range of a Boing 747 taking off, and a full house at a Turkish football match. They are rated at 74 Db so I'm looking for a maximum of 72Db but preferably 70 or less.
On the long haul from Surrey to Aberdeen, the road noise can get a bit annoying.
Rick.

I see your point! Haha. The zeetek tyres have A rating for noise levels, 69db.

Federal Super Steel 595.

They are OK in the dry (aren't they all?) but prone to massive under-steer in the wet. Slip like a banana under acceleration, even in second gear.

Noisy, but assuming they weren't brand new when I bought the car, they seem to have a decent lifespan.

Moral?. If you don't mind a bit of noise, and drive like a 90 year deaf old vicar, they would possibly be OK for you.

In a moment of financial poverty, I had Accelera's fitted to the back. They seem to be OK after a few thousand miles, but I've had them balanced twice, but still get vibration at 70-80 mph. (just to try them you understand). I am wary of putting them on the front because of this, and wary of ultra cheap tyres having the same problem.

Try my tyres.com you can choose delivered or fitted at a garage near you when it's convenient. I did look at them, and even Michelin pilots weren't much more expensive than mid range ones.

Agreed, mytyres.co.uk are where I get all my tyres from. They deliver quite quickly and you just need to get them fitted.

We bought two Falkens from them last week for shaun's 107 £66 for two delivered here for no extra charge like most do within 3 days. His mate works in a garage and fits them free. Unknown budget brand was going to be 55 each from local tyre place I have used for years.

I got tyres for my Saab from them, fitted in Dyce near Aberdeen, but I'm still finding my way around here. I believe there is a place nearby called Martins tyres that do fitting for Mytyres and other online companies. I'm going to ring them tomorrow to see what they have in stock and what their prices are like. They have a good reputation.

If you go to mytyres you can choose the fitted option, put your postcode in and they'll show you local fitting stations and give you a fitted price :)

Have a look at Maxxis. I had four fitted to my Xantia over six years ago and although I don't do big miles they still have four mill left on after 50k. Suit me to the point where I've just had two new ones fitted to the front of swmbo's Focus at £60 ea fitted. They come with a lifetime guarantee and there is fitting near to you.

OK, I have ordered two Avon ZZ5 through the AA, to be fitted at National tyres in Woking on Friday 27th.
I am getting an O/S lower suspension ball joint, a CV gaitor on the same side and investigating a fluid leak from the N/S (I suspect a leaking strut). A bit of an expensive week but in reality, I've had the car for just under 3 years and it has cost me very little so far. There is a lot of surface rust on the rear spheres and the pipework etc. I'm thinking eventually of a decent go at the area with a wire brush, then a spot of galvie paint. That will have to wait until I get some ramps (or borrow them)

Two tyres, fitted, wheels balanced and old tyre disposal £196.51p including small AA discount.

Thanks for all the input guys.
Rick.

I would also do an alignment if you have all this work done.

Don't know if it needs to be done after the lower ball joint is replaced, but I had all the alignment done last year
