It seems a good idea at the moment to acquire a spare cyl head for my 1997 ZX 1.9D. There's one on ebay which implies it's the same as a Peugeot 306:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-306-C ... 19fba68d75" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
eBay item number 111596178805 if the link doesn't work.
The head *looks* the same - apart from the breather pipe on the cam cover. Does anyone know (a): if they are the same, i.e. would they be a one-for-one swap; and (b): is the cam the same because I would want to fit the head as a built-up unit.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this...

Re: ZX 1.9D Cyl Head... Same As P306?
Should be the same.
The changes include (on years rather than anything else) a belt drive vacuum pump instead of cam drive but its too new for a belt drive, I think the difference there is the cam itself though not the head. There's things like EGR on the latest ones but this is really all bolted to the manifolds not to the head itself.
I see its a NA head as the cam profile at least is different with the turbo unit from what I recall.
Do you not have that breather outlet pipe on your existing head ?

Thanks foryour replies chaps.
spider: err, yes it does have a breather outlet on the cam cover, it was hiding under the air box.
oscar: hopefully the head casting would be the same though, being an engine common to both makes. But I would prefer to go for one off a Citroen simply because Murphy's Law is bound to raise its head somewhere along the line otherwise..!
Anyway, I've emailed the seller to check which type of vacuum pump it was fitted with and to see whether he will email me a photo of the end of the head.

Re: ZX 1.9D Cyl Head... Same As P306?
We did this (albeit the other way around - from a rear end damaged ZX into a Pug 306 XnD) and the heads were identical in our case. Some ancillary components were different, but they were all bolted on rather than part of the head itself.
We never did find why that head cracked! It never got overheated or anything. Just one day started running on three cylinders, found a whacking great crack in the head when we took it off.
Originally we were going to swap the whole engine as the donor car had about a quarter of the miles of my 306, but I didn't have any helpers on hand and didn't reckon my Metro would have taken kindly to a 1.9D engine being put in the boot! So whipped the head off instead.
Car is still going as far as I'm aware.

Re: ZX 1.9D Cyl Head... Same As P306?
It would be unlikely to be a belt drive one but not impossible, especially if the seller was not aware of what they were selling and thought they are all the same etc. I've seen DW8 heads before advertised as 1.9D for 205/206/306 etc, clearly they are not quite like that...
With the exception of the 1.8 units, belt drive stopped about 1992 from what I recall (had to keep the belt drive on the 205/309 TD units in most cases)

Many thanks for the replies. I agree it's unlikely to be belt drive but... Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear back from the seller regarding which one it is.

A pic of the end of the head will tell in 99% of cases as you'll have the slot / drivedog for the mounted vac pump or a threaded spindle (and you'll see its got an oil seal that end as well) for the belt drive pump.
Just that some sellers think all the heads are the same that's all...
