Hello Stewart.

We have a spare head but here is the worry.

We ran the engine for 10 minutes and it ran kinda ok although no power.

Then it spewed grey sludgy oil out of the oil filler.

When we drained it there was 10 litres of sludge - water mixed with oil and warmed up.

We could replace the head - but with that amount of pressure generated inside the engine we fear that the crankshaft oil-seals might be knackered - we havn't the appetite for another long haul with no result.

Bearing in mind that the horrible KKK turbo is suspect , we would prefer to buy a complete car with knackered bits (except the engine) - do the timing kit and waterpump , give it a service and paint it and then pop it in.

Bearing in mind that we have a gearbox/clutch problem also, its definately a lump-out job.

Morale a bit higher today though no farther forward.

We missed (by 3 hours) a running 306 1.9td yesterday for asking price of 325euros. Thats about £250.

We could have sold the bonnet , tailgate and doors for that sort of money and had a cheap engine.

Thanks Again.

Btw, our French neighbour , good mechanic, says he always uses just 4kg and then 8kg to torque down the 1.9td. Never has a problem. We were swinging out of the breaker bar to do the 110deg stuff and only managed 80deg on the second pull.

Thanks for the offer - shame about the distance.

We have been offered a complete Xantia lump for 150euros - about £110 - its only an hour from us and while the km is a bit high , it recently had a timing belt kit + waterpump, plus accessory belts.

We are not atall familiar with xantias - but in the photos the starter motor pokes out to the right (are we correct), whereas in the Boxer as in the 306, ZX and Xsara the starter is on the left of the box .

The engine should be good for us - however - is the sump the same, as in the photos it looks to have a bump near the starter - but the photo is unclear.

Wrong.. xantia engines are typical xud engines.. the starter sits across the front of the block with ring gear to the right into the gearbox on the right...

They are all the same in french cousins... its Rover that used their own gearbox and had the starter in a completely different place to Psa ..

1.9 td engines in xantias never got hydraulic clutchs..

The only engines that did in xantias were v6 manuals (europe only not uk) tct turbo and hdi 110 engines in s2

Here is the picture.

Please excuse our ignorance of Xantias.

Whats that lump low down right on the sump where the starter should be - is it part of the gearbox ?

I think you're looking at the pressure regulator, it's part of the suspension system. The starter motor is behind it.

Just to be sure and even more sure...

Just below the oil filter, follow the pipe to the right - first clip bolts it to engine block below a breather pipe , along to right 10mm bolt holds it to aluminium housing just before hydraulic pipe. Below this 10mm bolt is the bump we are talking about - alu but gone a bit green - can it come away to reveal a normal sump ? ~

Feel like a real numpty asking this but the seller hasn't removed the engine yet and we dont want to put him to the trouble of the work if we are not having it.

Yes thats the pressure regulator. Can you see the green sphere below the pipe screwed into it? The whole assembly removes and is as normal underneath. Its part of the hydropneumatic system so obviously not required on you're van.

Hello all again.

Got that Xantia engine, found the patience and energy to clean and paint it again, just like the first engine.

Have started to move items from Boxer to Xantia engine and have found a difference.

On the Clinder head in the Boxer Engine there is a pipe out of the head (Photo 1, item 2). The pipe out from below where the diesel filter normally sits (Photo 1, item 1) is capped off.

The pipe out of 2 goes to the expansion bottle (Photo 2, item 5)

On the Xantia engine, there is no pipe or blanking plug in the head (Photo 3, item 4) and the pipe from near the diesel filter is present (Photo 4, item 3)

Can we connect 3 to 5 ?

Yes...

No idea why they would drill a NEW bore into the cooling when they had an outlet.. capped off too already on that extra housing bolted on.... very strange.
