Cleaning a CV joint

Post by KennyW »

Hi Guys and Gals,

Best method of cleaning a CV joint of the grease?

Chuck it in the dishwasher without SWMBO noticing you or someother way :-D

I dismantle the bits into a large yoghurt container (bucket), wiping each piece as I go with paper towel, then spray into the container liberally with aerosol degreaser. Probably you have 120 needles and three rollers.

Then I place the container under the laundry tap and run hot water steadily into it until the water more or less runs clear. The heat also floats residual grease off the parts. Next I gently decant the water from the bucket until there's just a small amount covering the parts. I cover the plughole of the laundry tub with damped-down paper towel in two pieces, each folded twice, and gently pour the pieces out. The paper towel acts like a strainer. Then I dry them on fresh paper towel on the bench and lay out for counting/inspection.

:-D I've used the dishwasher more than once for such things, does a great job
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

i just disassemble the CV joint ( outer one ) and wash it in petrol, then reassemble ,

with the joint ( no not that kind of joint ) held in a vice tilt the cage holding the ball bearing on its side pop out the ball bearings that are exposed, the rotate the cage the other way to get the opposite bearings out, repeat this till you have all the bearings out, then on some CV joints the cage will have to longer holes at opposite sides the retain the bearings, rotate the cage on its side so the two longer holes are one at each side but still in the main joint body/cup, now you should be able to lift the cage out with the center castellated center section, now rotate the center section on its side in the cage so two of the bearing retaining lobes are pocking into two opposite holes in the cage, then tilt one side of the center section and lift it out of the cage,

mind you observe which outer face/edge of the cup was facing outwards at the begging of disablement, usually one edge/rim of the cage is thicker than the other, and the thinner edge faces outwards/towards the drive shaft,

reassembly is the opposite to dismantling, and i fit the CV joint back together ( not onto the shaft at this point ) before squeezing new grease in past each of the ball bearings and down the center were the shaft goes

Never done a cv joint, but years ago took a steering box apart and washed it with boiling water..........

would be wary about using a dishwasher with certain materials...........the salt might be a bit aggressive.......

Thanks Malcolm,

Just what I was looking for, I took off the reluctor ring off my old outer CVjoint using an angle grinder.

I didnt need to cut all the way through the ring as it came off with very little persuasion. Intend getting new ring, clean up joint and fitting it on offside where I've had the Abs sensor problem.
