Non-start C5
Jinxed my C5. Tried to start it yesterday morning (frosty night) but nothing happened. Tried to jump start with two different batteries but nothing again. It does make something like a buzzing sound when I try to start but doesn't seem that the engine is moving at all. COuld this be the starter or should I change the battery anyway?

Re: Non-start C5
Sounds like the battery to me - can you check the voltage with a multi meter?

Re: Non-start C5
It was the battery at the end. I think the cables my friend used to try and jump start my car are dodgy
Only problem is that they charged me for the wrong battery (asked for the 760cca and just checked and it is a 670cca). Another drive to the garage on Monday.

I know about volts n amps, n Ampere/hours
but where did CCa 's come from?
I looked it up, but how long has this term been in use?
another thing... I always was under the impression that once you get the engine turning, hang onto the key till it starts(or not, as the case may be)
but it seems that modern car batteries don't like this but "prefer" to deliver in short bursts...........

Ps MY jumper leads, now about 45 years old, started life as a 20 foot length of welding cable(for jump starting cold forklifts.....)

Re: Non-start C5
I think CCA's started to come into play when cars got more modern & had higher demands on the battery, the higher the CCA the better in my view.

Re: Non-start C5
CCA=Cold Cranking Amps.
It's the only really relevant statement of capacity for starting purposes.
You want the highest CCA figure you can get in the correct shape case.
It refers to the theoretical current available from the battery first thing on a cold morning.
Ideally you want this to be more than double the expected starting current, meaning a typical conventional 2liter diesel would need a CCA in the 500 - 800 range, while a small petrol model will be perfectly catered for by a 200 - 400 CCA battery
